Critics Consensus

Play Dirty marks a welcome return for writer-director Shane Black to the realm of wisecracking crime thriller, but haphazard execution makes this vehicle less of a comeback and more just low-stakes mucking around.

John Nugent Empire Magazine Not quite vintage Black, and Mark Wahlberg is no Robert Downey Jr, but this is fast and funny enough to be worth a couple of your hours. Squint hard enough and it almost feels like you’re back in the ’90s. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Ignatiy Vishnevetsky AV Club It’s overlong and friction-less, with chase and action scenes that quickly devolve into pile-ups of Rivian product-placements and gummy-looking VFX elements. Rated: C+ Oct 2, 2025 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com Nevertheless, it’s difficult to sit through 'Play Dirty’ without thinking about its failures. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 2, 2025 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation Beyond a few fun performances, this movie falls flat. The script feels bloated, and Shane Black's touch fails to shine through. Rated: 5/10 Oct 24, 2025 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy Play Dirty has a messy script that needs to be cleaned up, which is depressing considering it passed by Shane Black who should have known better. Rated: 30/100 Oct 19, 2025 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment Wahlberg, who has come a long way only to now repeatedly star in streaming films I don’t care for, plays the worst interpretation of author Richard Stark’s Parker yet in this film. Kyla G. Super unrealistic but it keeps you on your feet. Hilarious, action-packed, and unexpected. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Ryan C. Play Dirty is such a disappointment because it had so much potential with the star power in it, with the likes of Mark Walhberg and Lakeith Stanfield. Yet it’s a rehash of much better action thrillers that have a worthwhile plot. This film’s plot is so messy and script is so bad, that I did not care at all for any of the main players in it. The entertainment factor is also pretty low as I was constantly checking my watch to see how much longer I had left to get through it. Skip this one! Play Dirty gets a very low 1 1/2 stars out of 5. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review R C. Had some funny moments but lacked depth and could have been 30 minutes shorter. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Kyle F. Hilarious and unrealistic with great performances and action Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Peter F Review: Play Dirty (2025) The latest collaboration between writer/director Shane Black and star Mark Wahlberg, Play Dirty, is a significant disappointment that sadly suggests Black’s output is on a progressively downward trend. The film manages to hold some promise in its first act, exhibiting flashes of the snappy dialogue and clever plotting that Black is known for. It’s an agreeable, if unremarkable, opening that sets up a decent premise. However, once that initial energy burns out, the film quickly devolves into a dull and monotonous drudge. The narrative loses focus, the pace drags severely, and the witty exchanges disappear, leaving behind a tedious experience that overstays its welcome by a considerable margin. The casting of Mark Wahlberg is perhaps the most critical misstep. Wahlberg simply lacks the necessary charisma and compelling screen presence to anchor this type of Black-esque caper. He delivers a flat, unengaging performance that leaves a gaping hole where a dynamic lead should be. Ultimately, the combination of a meandering script from a director who seems to be losing his edge and an uninspired performance from its star results in a film that is both dumb and dull. Skip Play Dirty; it's a frustrating watch that leaves you wondering what poor life choices lead you to waste your time watching this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review . .. No trama. All the characters so forced. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
