Critics Consensus

Play Dirty marks a welcome return for writer-director Shane Black to the realm of wisecracking crime thriller, but haphazard execution makes this vehicle less of a comeback and more just low-stakes mucking around.

Mark Wahlberg is playing this guy like every guy he's ever played. Go to Full Review

Not quite vintage Black, and Mark Wahlberg is no Robert Downey Jr, but this is fast and funny enough to be worth a couple of your hours. Squint hard enough and it almost feels like you’re back in the ’90s. Go to Full Review

It’s overlong and friction-less, with chase and action scenes that quickly devolve into pile-ups of Rivian product-placements and gummy-looking VFX elements. Go to Full Review

Beyond a few fun performances, this movie falls flat. The script feels bloated, and Shane Black's touch fails to shine through. Go to Full Review

Play Dirty has a messy script that needs to be cleaned up, which is depressing considering it passed by Shane Black who should have known better. Go to Full Review

Wahlberg, who has come a long way only to now repeatedly star in streaming films I don’t care for, plays the worst interpretation of author Richard Stark’s Parker yet in this film. Go to Full Review

Phi S @PhiSchmo 3d There have been five Parker works come to the screen, in my(an avid reader and owner of the 28 novels generated around this character) opinion, Mel Gibson was better than Lee Marvin. That's the only real competition, when it comes to actors who were trying to become Parker. Wahlberg, a new player on the Richard Stark/Westlake landscape has not brought anything new to the character of Parker. Wahlberg could've phoned his performance in. It's his usual, canned, tough-guy performance - at least read the FIRST novel(The Hunter) in the series to get an understanding of one of the greatest, cross-continental, robbery crew bosses in all of noir crime fiction. Stratham, unfortunately disqualified himself with his Australian accent, it's a non-sequitur, for dyed in the wool fans of Parker. Wahlberg doesn't dig deep enough and as far as the action requirements of this film he's perfect, but he's no Gibson when revealing facets of the thief's nature that hint at his capacity for real love. See more Joshua P @Jpenegetic Mar 2 A interesting plot but very just ride along vibe , fast paced with funny moments and a good watch if you aren’t too critical and just want to enjoy something easy , entertaining See more Matt M @MattyBoh Mar 2 Stupid. Just very very stupid. Writing, plot, acting, all stupid. Multiple people get shot 5+ times and come back from the dead to shoot someone else before finally dying for real. Mark Cuban gives the most believable performance in the entire movie if that tells you anything. But if you don't mind that then you may be able to tolerate this. For my money, this was just a total whiff considering the parties involved See more S M. @smegazord Mar 1 Was fun movie. Ok formula script but good. See more George S @George_Speaks Feb 28 I had high hopes for this film considering who was attached. The first few minutes were so bad, story and execution, I had to come in here and check the rating on RT. Looks like they got it right here. I guess Hollywood needs regular film watchers as consultants to let them know what works these days. Don't waste your time unless you like to watch trash films See more Read all reviews
