Critics Consensus

Play Dirty marks a welcome return for writer-director Shane Black to the realm of wisecracking crime thriller, but haphazard execution makes this vehicle less of a comeback and more just low-stakes mucking around.

John Nugent Empire Magazine Not quite vintage Black, and Mark Wahlberg is no Robert Downey Jr, but this is fast and funny enough to be worth a couple of your hours. Squint hard enough and it almost feels like you’re back in the ’90s. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Ignatiy Vishnevetsky AV Club It’s overlong and friction-less, with chase and action scenes that quickly devolve into pile-ups of Rivian product-placements and gummy-looking VFX elements. Rated: C+ Oct 2, 2025 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com Nevertheless, it’s difficult to sit through 'Play Dirty’ without thinking about its failures. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 2, 2025 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation Beyond a few fun performances, this movie falls flat. The script feels bloated, and Shane Black's touch fails to shine through. Rated: 5/10 Oct 24, 2025 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy Play Dirty has a messy script that needs to be cleaned up, which is depressing considering it passed by Shane Black who should have known better. Rated: 30/100 Oct 19, 2025 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment Wahlberg, who has come a long way only to now repeatedly star in streaming films I don’t care for, plays the worst interpretation of author Richard Stark’s Parker yet in this film. Kyle M Shane Black’s comeback retains some of the familiar comedic style only to disappointingly blend into the chaotic, formulaic routine with nothing much to offer in terms of signature engagement besides relying on the beneficial cast’s performances. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/18/25 Full Review Nick R Terrible. Nothing to like here. Why did anybody bother to make this drivel? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Busisiwe X When I started watching I had no expectation but it's was so good even the twists some I saw them coming but others where unexpected. This has become one of my favourite heist Movies. I'm going to watch it couple of 100 times maybe. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Jada T JUST WATCH IT!! I never write movie reviews, however, the incredibly harsh critics here have done the general population a great disservice. SO GLAD I WATCHED IT DESPITE THE REVIEWS. This movie has everything you want from a heist movie. It’s action packed, full of dry humor (my favorite), actors played their roles well, a few twists and turns that keep it interesting, but overall it was VERY ENTERTAINING. It may not be an Oscar winning movie with an incredibly intricate plot and extreme realism, but it is one of the more entertaining heist movies I’ve seen. It’s comparable to Oceans 11 in my opinion. Honestly can’t believe the reviews it has gotten this far. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Lavish C Rosa is a powerful actress and a stunning woman, Mark is Mark, the Chai dude is a pleasant face, Shalhoub is a good old school actor, kind of out of place here, tonally wrong, but that's an issue with this whole movie, it's just tonally all over the place. In IMDb someone criticises how here there is lot of nonsense killing. I actually watched it because of that, as I hate politically correct movies, but I realise now that the problem is not the amount of killings, but that something feels just wrong, out of place, incomplete, missing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review William R. Over the top action with some good comedy included. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
