By the Law is essentially a three hander, played in the familiar silent style of wide-eyes and grand gestures; by stripping Edith's backstory out of London's story, Kuleshov's characters seem to have been fashioned to carry an obvious political message. See more 09/15/2010 Great film by Kuleshov, adapted from a Jack London story (the story is kind of like a more moral and morally sophisticated "3:10 to Yuma" as set in the Yukon). Superb cinematography (the snow and rain and trees are used to grand effect), editing, and performances, and one of the great endings ever. See more Read all reviews
