Critics Consensus

Pocahontas means well, and has moments of startling beauty, but it's largely a bland, uninspired effort, with uneven plotting and an unfortunate lack of fun.

Manohla Dargis L.A. Weekly 12/17/2024
The studio has made noise about its bid at enlightenment, as witnessed by its casting of Native Americans... Maybe that is one measure of progress, or maybe it's just the most cravenly shrewd retailing strategy in many, many a moon. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, though luscious to look at and painstakingly rendered, Pocahontas is an unusually joyless affair. The adventurous beauty rejects one suitor because he is too "serious," but this movie barely registers on the humor meter. Go to Full Review

For a film which has been heralded as painstakingly PC, Pocahontas's conscience stretches only to portraying American Indians as human beings which, in 1995, hardly qualifies as a particularly sophisticated perspective. Go to Full Review

After the successes of Disney’s previous animated features, this one has a tough time separating itself, despite the drastic shift in period and locations. Go to Full Review

Pocahontas strives for Romeo and Juliet-style sentiment, but it is shackled by its own constraints. The lovers can't really rise above the petty jealousies of their elders because, as the film never stops reminding us, the issues aren't petty. Go to Full Review

The Monets, Manets and Degas of the '90s aren't hanging in some urban art museum. They're in Pocahontas -- and they're about as breathtaking as contemporary art gets. Go to Full Review

Kymber H @SandlotLover17 13h This movie is solid, but not amazing. I can’t believe that Disney’s a team was working on this while the B team was working on The Lion King! 😆 See more C T @MoralesC 2d I’m currently binging well known and beloved Disney movies! Pocahontas is a movie I could watch again and again. The movie is so grounding and I admire its emphasis on Mother Nature and what she has to offer. I also love Disney’s portrayal of the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. I’m saddened they go their separate ways which is why I give it 4.5 stars! See more Marcus F Jan 3 This is my favourite Disney movie but it does not represent native Americans properly. The animation is beautiful and I love the music but for most people it is forgettable. See more Dustin B @DustinBalacio Jan 3 While it has gorgeous animation and fun songs, most of the film is uninspired, forgettable, and incredibly disrespectful to the original story. See more Ethan G @ethdrew05 Dec 31 About Pocahontas, is another Disney classic. I always thought Pocahontas was beautiful, and her voice was amazing—especially when she sang "Colors of the Wind," which felt very heartwarming and emotional. Her father initially wants her to marry the warrior Kocoum, but she meets John Smith, a fictionalized British explorer, at a secluded waterfall after the English settlers arrive in Virginia. Their story focuses on peace between the settlers and Native Americans. When Kocoum attacks John Smith out of jealousy, he is accidentally killed, which makes the movie even more emotional. It’s a powerful and memorable film. See more D3Z 1 Dec 31 Even though Disney's animated take on Pocahontas does have a lot left to be desired in terms of its pacing, the animated visuals were so beautifully mesmorising to watch as well as some of its story and songs were quite well done too.
