Critics Consensus

Pokémon Detective Pikachu may not take its wonderfully bizarre premise as far as it could have, but this offbeat adaptation should catch most -- if not all -- of the franchise's fans.

I found this weirdly diverting... It's a counterintuitive fit for this character, and I kind of liked that about it. Go to Full Review

Pretty well-done, and when it got to the end, the bits that are meant to tug on your heart strings twitch the very top register... Go to Full Review

The movie relies more on story than fight scenes such as trainer battles between Pokémon, but when we do see that, it is such a sight. Go to Full Review

For hardcore fans, it might be everything you’ve ever wished for, but for fans of the 2000s Pokémon, who stopped following the franchise (...) the numerous Easter Eggs and references might not be enough to overcome the undeniable narrative issues. Go to Full Review

Terry G 08/22/2022 it was a live action pokemon film, could have been much better. heres hope for a legend of zelda film at some point. See more Xavier 04/04/2022 such nostalgia ,loved it See more Steven 01/28/2022 Really dumb kids movie. Visual effects were nice though. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Dec 15 Detective Pikachu is a visually impressive film with detailed CGI and vibrant cityscapes, but it struggles to satisfy true Pokémon fans. Focusing on Ryan Reynolds’ Pikachu and a new protagonist rather than Ash Ketchum removes a central element that longtime fans expected. While Reynolds delivers humor and charm, the story fails to capture the heart of the original franchise. Pacing and tone feel uneven, and some humor falls flat. Justice Smith’s performance is adequate but lacks depth, and side characters are forgettable. For casual viewers, the film offers lighthearted entertainment, but for fans, it feels like a missed opportunity. Overall, it’s a middle-ground adaptation that leaves room for a proper sequel.
