      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Pokémon Detective Pikachu may not take its wonderfully bizarre premise as far as it could have, but this offbeat adaptation should catch most -- if not all -- of the franchise's fans.

Terry G it was a live action pokemon film, could have been much better. heres hope for a legend of zelda film at some point. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/22/22 Full Review Xavier such nostalgia ,loved it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/22 Full Review Steven Really dumb kids movie. Visual effects were nice though. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/22 Full Review Celine S As a Pokémon fan that grew up with these creatures, I loved this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Zachary Y I loved Pokemon and Deadpool Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Cash S Detective Pikachu is a surprisingly great movie. I'm not a Pokémon fan. I don't dislike it, I just only know the bare minimum about it. This movie does a fantastic job at making this perfectly accessible for someone like me. A lot of the humor that is for Pokémon fans, actually works just as well for someone that doesn't know a lot about it. The humor that's not specifically targeted towards Pokémon is also great in this, with some laugh out loud moments throughout. They also do a great job at taking the world of Pokémon, and making a new world that stays true to original. The best part of this movie, is probably the world that they created. It's really cool to see this world with Pokémon walking around this city, and seeing how the technology is made for them, while still being like the technology the real world has. The special effects are fantastic in this, with all of the Pokémon looking perfect. I'm gonna be completely honest and say, I like Pikachu better with Ryan Reynolds' voice coming out of him. Ryan Reynolds does a fantastic job at bringing his hilarious personality to this world. Justice Smith is also great in this. He brings the perfect amount awkward and charm to the character, and does a great job talking to fake Pokémon. If you told me that they got real Pokémon and he was talking to them, I might actually believe you, because the CGI along with the acting, is that great. The film is also surprisingly emotional, with the main character's relationship with his dad. The mystery throughout the film is fine enough, considering that this is a kids movie, but you can really see the ending of this coming from a mile away. Also, I'd be lying if I ALL of the jokes landed, because there were a few that didn't quite work. This is a really good movie, and I would love a sequel. Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) It's a delight for fans to see how immersive this world actually feels. Rated: 3/5 Dec 10, 2020 Full Review Justin Chang FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I found this weirdly diverting... It's a counterintuitive fit for this character, and I kind of liked that about it. Sep 28, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Pretty well-done, and when it got to the end, the bits that are meant to tug on your heart strings twitch the very top register... May 22, 2019 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews For hardcore fans, it might be everything you’ve ever wished for, but for fans of the 2000s Pokémon, who stopped following the franchise (...) the numerous Easter Eggs and references might not be enough to overcome the undeniable narrative issues. Rated: B- Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Ash Jefferson But Why Tho? A Geek Community Detective Pikachu is a great time that is well worth watching in the theater if for nothing more than it’s gorgeous visuals. It’s a film that you can take the whole family to and everyone will find something to enjoy. Rated: 7/10 Jan 22, 2023 Full Review Jeffrey Harris 411mania Detective Pikachu generally works and is a reasonably enjoyable, fun film. Considering what has happened with video game-based films in the past, that's high praise at this point. Rated: 7/10 Apr 18, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
