Nick M Mary Pickford stars in this first film adaptation of Pollyanna. In the first half I was ready to write off the picture as too saccharine to be taken seriously, but I perked up once her ever-present cheerfulness was challenged after she was hit by a car and realized she could no longer feel her legs. Seeing all of the people in the community rally around her in her time of need as she had done for them was genuinely touching, and despite the excessive earnestness I started tearing up when she began to walk again. This is mostly due to the fact that Pickford can bring this type of character to life so completely that I can't help but be drawn in by her performance. The supporting roles also did a good job carrying the story off - particularly Howard Ralston as Jimmy Bean and Katherine Griffith as Aunt Polly. The picture does end too abruptly (and has a disappointingly clichéd ending), but it isn't enough to spoil the whole effect. It has no claim to greatness, but it is a feel-good movie that I enjoyed my time with. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Audience Member The best inspiring movie ever made! Despite her childlike performance she is undeniable presence on screen & in many ways the prefect actress for this role. The story is wildly sentimental & cliche but it's still enjoyable & Mary's remarkable talent reigns through. A must see of hers if your a fan.
