Built on such a loose foundation, Trivial Matters never becomes more than just an inessential piece of marginalia for most audiences, but it also serves as a showcase of the director's vivid imagination and keen attention to detail. While the stories that make up the different parts range from instantly forgettable and pointless to brilliantly funny and achingly bittersweet, together they add up to an uneven whole.
