A mysterious albino teenager, Jeremy "Powder" Reed (Sean Patrick Flanery), is rescued from the basement in which he's lived since birth. But the extremely intelligent Reed is not welcomed into the community. Students at his school fear the outsider because of his bizarre ability to harness extrasensory perception and heal the sick. His relationship with a fellow student, Lindsey (Missy Crider), doesn't help matters either, despite the help of two teachers (Jeff Goldblum, Mary Steenburgen).

Critics Consensus

Powder has some interesting and potentially affecting ideas, but they're ultimately dust in the wind of a drama that strains far too obviously for uplift.

Performed to the hilt by Flanery and filmed with conviction by Victor Salva, the movie is finally too solemn to survive its pushy musical strings. Go to Full Review

Powder has all of the elements of a successful fantasy, and none of the insights. It's a movie where intriguing ideas lie there on the screen, jumbled and unrealized. Go to Full Review

Mary C @mhchristiano Dec 20 A great fable about the challenges of growing up in unusual circumstances with unusual capabilities while coming to terms with the dark underbelly of humanity. A sad and heartfelt look at the passages into the understanding of the harsh realities of life. See more Martin S @MTScreeton Dec 11 One of the best movies out there from the 90's... you will really enjoy it! See more Raymond D @raydiaz Nov 27 I thought this was a wonderful film. An insight into the power of the human spirit, albeit as fantastical as it is. It is not deserving of the negative reviews. I liken this film to The Green Mile, though not as good. A little more sci-fi and mystery than the latter but many of the elements are similar. Jeremy Reed, born on a stormy night on which his mother passes away after being struck by a lightning bolt. Nicknamed Powder because of his albinoism, he is possessed with an advanced intellect, paranormal powers; the power to heal and the ability to sense the thoughts around him he is perceived as an outcast in his town. A great cast. Sean Patrick Flannery as Powder, Jeff Goldblum and Mary Steenburgen as two teachers who want to help Powder assimilate to the world around him, and Lance Henricksen, who's wife is dying. See more Gregory S Nov 2 I just love this movie. It is actually the only movie directed by Salva that I will watch. He is such a disgusting human. But, I absolutely love this movie.
