After his latest novel, "The Rainbow," courts controversy, author D. H. Lawrence (Ian McKellen) travels with his wife, Frieda (Janet Suzman), from his native England to the U.S. to escape the outrage it has caused. His reception there is less than warm, so they depart for Mexico and then Italy as Lawrence battles tuberculosis. Once in Italy, he settles down to write what will eventually become both his greatest and his most notorious work: "Lady Chatterley's Lover."
