Guy Lodge Variety If nothing else, "Queen Marie" proves that the Romanian industry can churn out stodgy, attractively decorated Europuddings with the best of them, but it's hard to see who the audience for this multilingual snoozer might be. May 7, 2021 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Romania has delivered some of the most bracing filmmaking of the past 20 years... but "Queen Marie" shows that its cinematic output also extends to stiff, exposition-clotted biopics. May 6, 2021 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages Queen Marie may not be a modern historical classic, but its wink-of-the-eye moments subtly inform the audience about the filmmakers intent. That, I can appreciate. Feb 18, 2022 Full Review Marie Asner Phantom Tollbooth The weight of the film is on Rosana Lupu and she does it well. Rated: 3/5 May 21, 2021 Full Review Lisa Trifone Third Coast Review Queen Marie proves to be a decent enough entry point into the woman at this particular moment in her life. Rated: 2.5/4 May 13, 2021 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound Based on a true story, I am guessing that the actual story is more interesting than the way it is presented in this film. M. D I read Queen Marie's autobiography and found the movie interesting. Her life continued to be quite dramatic beyond the point where the movie ends. I therefore expected a short summarized reference to the rest of her life to appear before the movie's credits. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a straightforward case that highlights the period's awful misogyny while also honouring Marie's early feminism and bravery, as well as her tireless efforts on behalf of a country that wasn't hers by blood but by her spirit and hearth. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review brent m "Politics is a complicated business" is a theme that frequently surfaces and aptly pervades the narrative of this historical drama about the role that Queen Marie of Romania played in the challenging task of helping to reshape her war-torn country in the wake of World War I. Through this film, viewers witness how the strong-willed monarch determinedly changed the hearts and minds of indifferent American, French and British power brokers about the future of her country during the drafting of the Treaty of Versailles. While some elements of the story are admittedly underdeveloped, as are the nature and background of some of the film's supporting characters, director Alexis Sweet Cahill's latest nevertheless provides intriguing insights into a little-known historical saga and the life of a formidable, compassionate humanitarian who strived to improve the lot of a nation that wasn't even her own birthplace. The superb lead performance by Roxana Lupu as the storied sovereign and the picture's impeccable period piece production values make for an engaging watch, even for those who might not usually find such tales particularly captivating, one indeed fit for a queen.
