Critics Consensus

Led by a searing performance from Elisabeth Moss, Queen of Earth is a demanding -- and ultimately rewarding -- addition to writer-director Alex Ross Perry's impressive filmography.

It displays some of the navel-gazing impulses of the mumblecore movement; it's no surprise to see that mumble-originator Joe Swanberg serves as a producer. Go to Full Review

At times, the style is very mannered but Moss and Waterston give rich and subtle performances as the two feuding friends who provide a twisted reflection of one another. Go to Full Review

It's a one-note drama of simmering resentment. That note is sustained with impressive conviction. Go to Full Review

Evermore embedded in the annals of New York genteel cinema, Perry’s dramatis personae are a grating group, but they’re a hell of a lot of fun, too. Go to Full Review

An intimate character study of a shifting, indefinable character, Queen of Earth pushes the already exceptionally talented Elisabeth Moss to new levels of intense frenzy and naked emotion. Go to Full Review

Even if you prefer his previous film there is no doubt that the filmmaker is one to continue to watch, and perhaps an even more interesting one that first thought. Go to Full Review

Kevin L @Lakeman Feb 23 Okay, not a real fan of Alex Ross Perry, it seems. Tried watching two of his movies so far; one I didn't finish and this one I did, but it was some drudgery for me. I love Elizabeth Moss, and hadn't seen either of these earlier roles. She's very strong in "Queen of Earth", and I get what Perry is trying to reflect. What Catherine goes through in her unraveling of perception and reality is expressed convincingly enough by Moss. She's exceptional with facial expression and body language. She does uncomfortable misfit really well. Her's is by far the most interesting figure to follow. The other characters were rather thin, imo. The Rich and James characters were pretty static. Waterson's Virginia has a bit more to her, but a lot of her screen time is simply staring at Catherine in dismay, concern, or fright; or at Rich with joy as they carouse but wariness as he teases and prods Catherine. Feels more like an extended short. Even at 90 min., I felt like this could've been as effective at about 72-75 min. There was more than enough of Catherine's unstable dialogue to get the point and themes out to the audience. Some aspects to appreciate, esp. Moss, but it seems like the work of a younger director. And it should, as Perry was in his late 20's when he got this one underway. 2.8 stars See more Jen E @bitterpayment 05/02/2024 Hit me hard. The unravelling and degrees of depression was done so well. Those struggling with depression may understand and appreciate this more See more Alec B 12/14/2023 I'm not convinced that this is the brilliant psychological portrait everyone seems to think it is, but Moss gives one hell of a performance. See more 06/16/2021 Loved it. The acting. The score. The direction. I'd watch it again. It creates a mood that immerses you. See more 05/11/2021 Highly disturbing the film grasps your attention with a thriller grip, although leaves you stressed without any resolution. The performance of Moss is just great though. See more 03/14/2021 Boring, poorly edited, sound is too low or too high making it a pain to watch. Just a plain, boring movie without anything of value made. Sad, sad, boring movie.
