Nick F Dec 17 In this engaging 1964 Western, The Quick Gun, Audie Murphy is a disillusioned gunman returning to his home town hoping to rekindle a relationship with a former girlfriend. But things go wrong right from the start – his girlfriend rejects him, and then he learns his old gang are coming to the town to steal a gold deposit while most of the men in the town are away on a cattle drive. Leading the gang is Spangler, a ruthless killer, so Murphy knows he has a big problem, and he rounds up a handful of elderly folk to help build a barricade across the main trail into the town. Murphy turns in his usual polished performance, but Ted De Corsia is truly outstanding as the leering, sneering gang leader Spangler, and Merry Anders also exceptional as Murphy’s girlfriend, torn between her love for him and her hatred of violence. Anders was a fine performer who appeared in around 20 films in the 1960s, yet in 1971, quit the movies to work as a receptionist. REVIEWED by Nick Fletcher. See more r 9 06/05/2020 'The Quick Gun' never exerts itself, but it's still a western that (only just) held my interest from start-to-finish. The premise is watchable enough, which is fortunate as the acting, dialogue and fight scenes aren't great. All of the acting is on the wooden side, with the exception of Ted de Corsia who is pretty good as Spangler. The cast are all likeable, though don't quite give top performances in my opinion. Dialogue-wise it's boring, there's quite a few moments with blocks of speaking. The combat isn't pleasing on the eye either, given its slow nature. The music and camera work is OK, I guess. If you want to sit back and chill with a western that doesn't take much effort, then this is one for you. It's fine to watch, if underwhelming overall. See more 12/03/2014 Fast paced & routine Western, starring Audy Murphy in a role he played more than once - the tortured soul who wants to do the right thing, even though everyone is against him... Murphy saves the town--It's your standard bad guy vs. good bad guy western. Having said all of that, fans of the genre and Audie Murphey will no doubt enjoy this film... The prodigal returns!!
