paul d John Francis Larkin's Quiet Please, Murder ! is a modest but good mystery shot in a quasi-film noir style typical of the era. It is buoyed by several good performances, with an oily George Sanders and an ice-cold Gail Patrick both playing to type, and well. The film deflates whenever they are off-screen, except for Lynne Roberts, who is a bright and believable presence in a small role. Richard Denning's joking private detective seems jarring and inappropriate. The film was made during WW2, so the screenwriters added Nazis as the villains to help with wartime propaganda, but that was a stretch. Perhaps this would have been better as a stage play ?
