What to Know

Critics Consensus

R100 definitely isn't for everyone, but audiences open to writer-director Hitoshi Matsumoto's fetish-driven thrills will find it a suitably perverse pleasure to watch.

Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Even if you like bizarre movies, you'll probably like "R100," then hate it, then go back to liking it, then wonder what you're looking at. And then the movie will end. Rated: 3/4 Jan 23, 2015 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times "R100" suggests that extreme and perverse films allow the everyman to seek thrills in his otherwise-monotonous life. Jan 22, 2015 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Matsumoto works overtime to keep this vital once the basic premise has been established, but the cultural subtext is so potent that he really can't go wrong. Jan 22, 2015 Full Review Pieter-Jan Van Haecke Psychocinematography Within the stylish composition, these subtle excursions of realism emphasize the very absurdity of what befalls our main character: Takafumi Katayama. Jul 26, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Fans of Matsumoto are likely to be reeled in, but inexplicable twists and turns aggravate its intermittent flashes of interest. Jul 18, 2019 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie It makes for a hit and miss experience, with some scenes so singularly strange that I wish it could have worked out much better than it actually did. Jeffrey P One of the more demented films to ever captivate. It’s not quite the same level as The Human Centipede, but there are definitely some things you’ll wish you’d never seen. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review Rick R good acting, but I never got into this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review Dante R Oh my God, this movie is so funny. Lindsay Kay Hayward's entrance had me dying! I re-watched that scene so many times. There's a good deal of slapstick (not complaining) but the more subtle humorous scenes are done well. Sometimes I'd be watching it and I'd be like, "Oh shit, that's a little too far", but it's really not, it's funny! Loved the movie in a movie concept. Loved the mini-documentary style vignettes of the dominatrices. It's my favorite Matsumoto film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie with interminable interpretations. Entertaining yet difficult to grasp. The character descended into sexual dissipation, and that much I understand. In actuality you can make no sense of what is actually happening, or the true meaning of the film as it heads into a bizarre outcome. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The most illogical, bizarre movie I’ve seen to date. The movie eventually turns into sci-fi, with a Japanese-woman becoming an alien with an enormous mouth to eat humans with. If you’re like me, you probably said “what the fuck”after you read that last sentence. Maybe you’ll like this movie, however, that is only possible if you simultaneously like being spanked by tall, Japanese women with a BMI of 18.2. If you’re like the rest of us, this movie is beyond a waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/22 Full Review Audience Member My wife and I love nonsensical movies but this one really takes the cake. We've seen the likes of Ichi the Killer, Trainspotting, Gozu, and other absolute mind-boggling movies but this film was beyond our scope of rational comprehension. It made us laugh hysterically but I still have no idea what this movie was about and I like it that way. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
