The Tamil version is better directed, better acted, better edited, with music that's organically welded. The lines are sharper, the supporting cast and the main leads connected. Go to Full Review

While it's hard to see why Villain was so feted by the Japanese academy, the moody, social-realist vibe makes this worth a look. Go to Full Review

RAAVANANs incredible visual quality overwhelms everything. So much so that you can almost overlook all its detriments. But only almost. Go to Full Review

Piyumika J Jan 30 One of the most beautiful tamil films I’ve ever seen. Far more better than the Hindi one. Chiyan Vikram is one hell of an actor. His raw emotions just flow through the whole movie. The way veeraiya depicts his love for Ragini is just brilliant. The scene where he’s on the boat and asking Ragini to stay with them is just beautiful. I loved the ending. The last song naan varuvain is so good and captures veeraiyas pain beautifully. Veeraiya is one of those characters whom will live in your heart for a long time. Aish looks breathtaking as always with little to no makeup. What a great cinematography. Hats off to Mani Ratnam sir. Cinematography by Santhosh Sivan was praise-worthy and it goes without saying that watching the movie makes anyone yearn to visit Athirappilly for once !! See more 05/17/2021 Raavanan - 10/10. Mani Ratnam is a director that has been so successful yet so overlooked in his career. He has directed some of the greatest tamil cinema films of all time, yet, also has directed some of the most underrated movies of all time. Raavanan happens to be one of the movies that got overlooked, and sadly, underappreciated when it originally released. A modern day retelling of Raamayana, the movie is a symbollic masterpiece, with the viewing experience being poetry on screen. There are some movies that are great, and then some that are so great that they deserve to be celebrated. Raavanan is one of them. With powerful performances from the lead trio in characters that bode similar to their Ramayana characters (Vikram/Raavana, Aishwarya Rai/Sitha, and Prithiviraj/Raman), Mani Ratnam explores each character with such depth and understanding, allowing the viewer to decide whether they are good or not. Borrowing from the legendary Japanese film Rashomon, the movie explores the dynamic that happens between the hostage taker and the hostage. As the story grows, we see that things are obviously not as clear as night and day, with grey shades thrown into the motives of certain individuals. Ratnam has also followed the story of Ramayana really well and leaves hints of the story here and there for those who are well versed in the history of Ramayana (for example: Vikram's character never lays a finger on Aishwarya Rai's, just like in the story. Even the crossing of the ocean to get to Sri Lanka is shown symbollically in a scene in the film, for those who have a very in tune eye). Its a film that is such a fantastic visual force of nature, with the combined cinematography work of Manikandan and the legend Santhosh Sivan (Santhosh Sivan had to join the production after Manikandan dropped out due to delays) showcasing the epic vision that Ratnam had. Its such a grand and vast experience, through nature and the various locations that the journey takes the viewer. One of my all time favourite tamil movies, and one of my all time favourite movies in general! See more 01/03/2021 I watched the tamil version, this in no away a bad movie, how mani ratnam takes the epic story and grounds it is really intresting while The cast gives a awesome performance The screenplay seemed to have been weak Could have improved some more especially the first half feels so much lengthy than it has the right to be See more Read all reviews
