Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic The whole picture is a bit too proud of itself, too thematically pat; but as is occasionally true with show-offs, there's something to its showing-off. Jun 16, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

Aly L I love this movie. Indeed, it shows how fragile us humans are when pressed in between the rivalling political forces, when history and life itself is about to crush us as individuals and groups. This movie is about choices and balancing on the edge. When you and your love are torn and killed. When you can feel joy and happiness but it cannot last. But once you feel it, you feel alive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesante, filmada de manera grandiosa y con buenas actuaciones, aunque el argumento es algo irregular. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Russian melodrama about a silent film star who gets involved with her cameraman, an underground revolutionary. As a Day for Night-style farce about the filmmaking industry, it's not so hot. The humor is a bit too slapsticky, or perhaps just doesn't translate well. As a political film, it fares better... a bit one-sided by necessity, but with some nuance and not too propagandistic. As a period romance, it's pretty good. The scenes of Olga and Victor courting are exceptionally lovely, the highlights of a film which has fine cinematography throughout. I'd say I liked this one about as much as Mikhalkov's Burnt by the Sun, but for entirely different reasons. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesante, filmada de manera grandiosa y con buenas actuaciones, aunque el argumento es algo irregular. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review ari v Another film that doesn't seem to know quite what its saying, but nonetheless packs some rather stirring attributes. The most stirring here, is the manner in which the film delves into and explores some of its moments. Lifting them (through music, pause, etc.) to seemingly spiritual heights. Among the many tools in a filmmaker's toolbox, this one seems as often overlooked as it is brimming with a wonderful potential power. It's used rather well here. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member its a good thing ive head books on russian silent film because the historical context would be very difficult to understand without prior knowledge. anyway, this is a good early effort from mikhalov though not as engrossing as his later work. vera kuznetsova was excellent though Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
