Darcy (Dev Patel) and Daphne (Rosy McEwen) Davenport are freshly decamped from London and taking up residence in an isolated cottage deep in the Welsh countryside in search of creative renewal and acoustic inspiration. When the couple set about exploring their new environs, recording instruments in tow, Darcy stumbles upon a "faerie circle" that emits a strange, unidentifiable frequency; this odd discovery is followed closely by the appearance of an otherworldly child (Jade Croot) who claims to live nearby and is eager to befriend the Davenports. Soon the child becomes a fixture in their household, alternately ingratiating himself and raising suspicions, and exposing unacknowledged rifts and unexamined secrets that threaten to wreak psychological and spiritual havoc in the lives of his makeshift adoptive parents.

Critics Consensus

A bold creative swing that doesn't quite connect, Rabbit Trap captures the attention with its hypnotic soundscape but can't maintain its hold due to a disappointingly thin story.

There’s so little substance underlying the suspense that when you finally get your “aha” answers, you’re left wondering why you came into the woods in the first place. Go to Full Review

Verging on magic realism, the moss and fungus invading the interior of the cottage as Davenports are put under the spell of the child is truly a wonder (thanks to production designer Lucie Red). Patel and McEwen have terrific chemistry together. Go to Full Review

Norm V Sep 17 Very dry horror that is hard to understand. See more Will Sep 17 Definitely an interesting vibes movie, but kinda fell apart at the end. See more christine i Sep 12 Very strange story. But the acting was great. See more Earl K @Bigshow 4d So sick of sitting and wasting time watching crap, I could write a better horror movie in the same amount of time it would take me to take a crap, which is what this film is, please don’t watch it, do anything else but waste time on this crap, pathetic, stupid, waste of time. See more Vincent S. @Vin_E_At_The_Movies Dec 8 This movie lost me 45 minutes in. I love the atmosphere and the sound design but I couldn’t get into the characters and the intriguing first half turns into boredom. See more Etienne R Nov 27 I was fully immersed. This is how to tell faerie stories. Bonkers good writing and execution to bind the trauma narrative to the faerie story. The film did a bunch of ambiguity between which story was being developed at any given moment, and put in no work to hold your hand through which bits are diagetic and which are expressions of the emotions. I don't want my hand held by a film - Marvel covers that market. If you can't handle ambiguity in a faerie story, you probably shouldn't jump online and review it. The d&d, fantasy, and folklore communities need to discover this. Four incredible things stood out to me through this film: - an authentic trauma/catharsis narrative - a playful and terrifying faerie story - sound design to make audiophiles obsessed - cinematography and locations that immersed me I loved it. If you've read Patrick Rothfuss, or watched Critical Role or Dimension 20, you'll understand everything you need to in order to get what's going on here. See more Read all reviews
