Heather Hogan Autostraddle A heckin fun movie, full of stunning action sequences and laughs and winks at the kids who grew up watching Back to the Future and Jurassic Park and E.T. and Indiana Jones. Aug 27, 2021 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews It's pure entertainment, and gives Spielberg an easel to prop his sentimental painting on, and all the colors on his palette to do so. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine For all its ferocious energy, Ready Player One strikes me as the product of a cinema of exhaustion-it's a film about having come too far and being at the end of something, where extraordinary things no longer mean much, or have become toxic. Apr 5, 2018 Full Review Justin Kim Loud and Clear Reviews Ready Player One is perfectly entertaining and enticing, but the sum of its parts ends up significantly less realized than its full potential. A Geek Community While the first half of [Ready Player One] is all trivia is the superior form of geekdom and awkward geekboy somehow managing to get the geekgirl interested the second half shows how you can form real communities online. Rated: 5/10 Jan 21, 2023 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation Steven Spielberg delivers the ultimate expression of why we digest media, and possibly a glimpse into a world we could all be heading towards. Patrick The 70MM was excellent. I already liked the film but seeing it again in this way was a dream, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Tyler I was entertained but that's where my review stops unfortunately. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review Scott J loved everything part of the movie and a great adaptation to the book! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Nick G Nick G. A fun movie to watch, but feels long and missing something. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/21 Full Review Leaburn O Released during that point in time when the tech bros were trying to hype sell the notion that the metaverse was the future. Outside of the fringe tech geeks no one ever bought into virtual reality headsets as a good idea…good news if you wanted some faith in humanity restored. In any case, Hollywood being so geographically close to Silicon Valley couldn’t help but get carried away with the hype and Spielberg decided this would be his pawn to our inevitable future. So we were all taught another unambiguous moral lesson by Uncle Steven, that reality is actually better than virtual reality. What would we do without Spielberg? Probably be like the comic con kids in this film who lived on a rubbish heap and got so wrapped up in their film that they felt they were saving the real world by winning a game in virtual reality. The film is targeted at a silly demographic but it is the graphics and the rollicking start to the film that offer promise. By the time we get to the third key and a Marvelesque all out war for virtual world domination, the story has unfortunately spiralled well out of control. A tip of the cap for the regular classic cinema references and another well produced film but really it’s a bit of a well executed fluff piece from a Director who thought he was on point but actually got a bit lost in the hype of the brief mad era. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Edward G An instant classic. I was blown away. I am not a gamer and actually avoid that whole world, but this movie was INCREDIBLE. It touches on the deep places of longing and aspiration in the human soul, and addresses and explores the necessary resistance against tyranny that some in our history of humanity are forced into. And the effects, world-building, and overall plot are exceptional. I am actually happy I didn't read the book. It allows this movie to be a stand alone gem in modern film (apparently if you have read the book, you have to also have huge problems with this movie). This is a rewatch for sure.
