Silly premise notwithstanding, this is a well-made Hollywood movie: Thrilling and exciting action with just enough characterization.

Chris M Oh my god.. where do I even begin.. the team did such an amazing job with everything they did. It's like a piece of Diamond in the rough, only it's robots in the rough. Hugh Jackman gives one of his best lead performances Charlie Kenton, a disgraced boxer conning his way through life, even when he comes to his own son. He's matched perfectly by Dakota Goyo as his son, Max, who is equally a con person but deep down desperately wants to connect with his father. Behind the camera, director Shawn Levy takes a silly premise and crafts a fun movie, with some fantastic action scenes between the fighting robots (helped by using actual actors in mo-cap suits) and honest character arcs. What's great is that Max starts out knowing exactly the kind of person Charlie is and still manages to bond with him. Overall, just a well-crafted movie from beginning to end. Logan Hill New York Magazine/Vulture It's more of a throwback to Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick, a rags-to-middle-class-respectability tale about the humble joy of old-fashioned decency. Nov 14, 2018 Full Review Shawn Levy New York Times All things considered, it is a well-wrought piece of entertainment, confidently paced, although its necessary subplots are little more than dutiful filler sandwiched between fight sequences. Nov 6, 2018 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine The truth is that it is a fun film and its few inconsistencies are insignificant compared to the outstanding special effects and the compelling thematic thread.
