Jesse Hassenger AV Club As elementally satisfying as a great Western. Rated: A- Dec 12, 2024 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) “Rebel Ridge” isn’t up there with Saulnier’s earlier films but it’s still something rare in the commercial movie landscape: A work of pure professionalism behind the camera and in front of it. Rated: 3/5 Oct 18, 2024 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer With a whip-smart plot, a strong lead in Aaron Pierre, and a standout villain in Don Johnson, director Jeremy Saulnier has done it again. Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Andrew Kendall Stabroek News As a cathartic high-octane revenge thriller, it is limp. As a character study, it is too tetchily schematic to offer more than ambling pleasures and as a cog in the wheel of law enforcement on screen it sounds a desultory conforming cry Apr 13, 2025 Full Review Dave Giannini InSession Film If you are looking for a simple revenge film, Rebel Ridge is not the right tree to bark up. Smartly, it never allows us the stock happy endings we crave. Rated: A- Feb 26, 2025 Full Review John Rocha The Outlaw Nation (Youtube) A fun, action packed and, yes, touching thriller with a standout performance from Aaron Pierre as Terry, a black man confronted by a sea of racist, small town cops as he tries to free his cousin and smash the corrupt stranglehold the law has on that town. Wallace V A film that revives the idea that men don't need to be violent all the time, shows us that men can control themselves and explode at the right time, but they need to be prepared for violence when necessary. How much films like this were missing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review David Z Rebel ridge was very good until the ending. The entire movie was 5 star until the last 5 minutes when I give it a 1 star. I can’t believe how badly it ended. I don’t think I would have spent over an hour and a half watching it if I had known it would have such a poor ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Tim M Making an action star out of Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge finds Jeremy Saulnier crafting another taut and tense thriller. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Joshua O Being an exceptional and intelligent representation of corruption within police units, this movie provided an immersive, multifaceted experience that complemented well-thought technicalities with gripping action. There was a mysterious air to every scene, extending from both the tense interactions the protaganist engaged in with other principal characters to the dim-lit ambiances that hallmarked some of the most memorable climaxes in the film itself. Overall, I can only give this film a 10/10 or A* rating, with this soul-striking performance being one of the few movies in the action genre that I can comfortably allocate an overall 97%. I have provided a more detailed analysis that describes how I reached my conclusion below: - Coherence and fluidity: 95%. The production was inherently jagged at times to conform with the genre although this occassionally compromised minor contextual details. - Acting and performance: 100%. The acting was exceptional, there is nothing I can scrutinize about it. - Content and layering of themes: 100%. The technical details surrounding the corruption of the police department supplemented the overarching theme of "resistance to disparity" commendably. - Elevation of awareness: 100%. The production raised awareness of key issues surrounding current global dynamics in an insightful and unique way. - Individuality: 100%. The movie was one of the most unique I have watched in its genre. In conclusion, I can only recommend this movie with absolute fervour, evidenced by the dexterity that underlied the breathtaking nature of this performance. A rare piece to enjoy in cinema, following the route of a swindled marine investigating the various theft crimes a struggling police force engaged in to survive in a withering environment. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Rob A A derivative but passable thriller about police corruption in a small southern town. The film was well cast; even at 75 Don Johnson still exudes a sort of 'energy' (not unlike Tom Cruise) - not all actors have that quality. Spoiler alert: there were several good cops in the movie as well. Overall, Rebel Ridge felt a bit inadequate for the big screen but works perfectly well as a "what should we watch" streaming option. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Tony D A good movie with an interesting plot but it falls short in the action department. It's a mix of Rambo and Jack Reacher. The acting is pretty good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/25 Full Review Read all reviews
