A gently humanist story of the American West from Max Walker-Silverman (A Love Song), Rebuilding follows Dusty (Josh O'Connor), a reserved, divorced father whose ranch has burned down in a devastating wildfire. Now living in a trailer community on a government-run campsite, Dusty finds solace with his new neighbors who have also lost everything, quietly reassembles his life, and starts reconnecting with his ex-wife Ruby (Meghann Fahy) and young daughter Callie-Rose (Lily LaTorre). Filmed against the rapturous backdrop of southern Colorado, Rebuilding is a ruminative, moving portrait of resilience and human connection in the wake of loss.

“Rebuilding” is rare in that it resists the pull of grim, prestige-picture drama, which would certainly be justified for the subject matter. Walker-Silverman instead steers toward the wistful and bucolic, depicting beauty and devastation at once. Go to Full Review

The story’s studied minor-key tone can occasionally come across as mannered, yet “Rebuilding” possesses its own delicate grace, especially once Dusty endures other losses — some personal, others more existential. Go to Full Review

Rebuilding is a slow and methodical film that will keep your attention and reward you with small beauties if you stick with it. It’s a kind of love poem to a way of life and a sense of place. Go to Full Review
