Hugo Davenport Daily Telegraph (UK) At first the film seems to ape the intense allegorical style of Zhang Yimou, but then it veers off into an overwrought, rather silly melodrama. Audience Member I think I would have liked it more if I had watched it 10+years ago. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating love story exploring the strictures of duty and obligation imposed by tradition and ancestor worship on the individual. A uniquely Chinese tale up there with the best of Zhang Yimou's work. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member It is one of my all time favorite movies. It is the passion within the story and the artful way in which it is rendered that brought me to my knees. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member As always.... forbidden love is always the best love.... but it always comes with a heavy price.
