First-rate mediocre salesman Antoine (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) and his attractive, successful and increasingly aloof wife, Hélène (Carole Bouquet), are en route to pick up their daughter from camp, bickering as usual. When the fight gets out of hand, Hélène goes on alone by train, while Antoine begins a debauched night at a local bar. There he meets a hitchhiker (Vincent Deniard) who insists on a ride, and Antoine can't help but think him the escaped killer he's been hearing about on the radio.

Critics Consensus

Red Lights is a taut, character-driven thriller, set against the debris-strewn battleground of a failing marriage.

StephenPaul C The greatest 1.75 hours ever!!!!!!!!! Featuring a French-speaking cast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Does a lot of great stuff but the story kind of falls apart in the third act. Worth watching though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review flixster f If you like to explore theories, you might wanna take this detour. I can only wish I'd avoided it. An utter disappointment, this friggin' (brilliant, for some; to each, their own) movie completely ruined my mood. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Here' what you need to know: there's a wussy husband, played wonderfully by Jean-Pierre Darroussin. He's a boozy insurance salesman, with a domineering wife, played with icy brilliance by Carole Bouqet, a lawyer whose success he resents bitterly. They both drive out to Paris to retrieve their children from camp, during which they learn that a criminal has escaped from prison. She leaves the car, and he tries to find her. That's about all you need to know as far as premise, other than Darroussin is amazing and director Cedric Kahn crafts a spellbinding thriller out of Georges Simenon's novel. It's a knockout. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Cleverly made; the tension between the couple leads well into the suspense of the latter half. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Red Lights is a languishing thriller that never takes off as such, and by no means does it have Hitchcockian suspense. Hitchcock built a suspense-tingling atmosphere brick by brick, whereas Red Lights doesn't do anything right. The movie did manage to engage me, but only mildly, and not for too long.
