Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint There is only so much Jennifer Lawrence can do in this set up. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Linda Marric HeyUGuys Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Rated: 3/5 Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Mo Muzammal Vague Visages In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Rated: 2/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM [Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Matty D Pulpy and melodramatic, Red Sparrow is an overlong spy thriller starring the endlessly watchable Jennifer Lawrence. Although the plot is full of holes, it remains entertaining throughout its sprawling runtime. An interesting meditation on human sexuality in parts, there are some standout moments in this casserole. It’s definitely no Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher film, but it’ll do for a once through. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/25 Full Review holly s Best movie I have seen in a long time. Loved the plot and didn’t expect the ending at all! Such an underrated movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review The H A lot of uncomfortable scenes, a somewhat confusing plot, not so interesting story or characters overall, they kept acting like she was a prodigy, yet she didn't do anything particularly special, a forced narrative of her being amazing without backing it up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Yash B "Red Sparrow" is one of those movies I was genuinely curious about back in 2018. I never got around to seeing it and decided to check it out, as it is directed by the winning team of director Francis Lawrence and with Jennifer Lawrence in the lead. It was interesting to see this "Hunger Games" duo make a film that could fully go for the R-rating. I think when it first started out the movie was interesting. I think as it went along I started to like it less and less. The movie eventually becomes tedious and boring and I just didn't like it by the time it ended. I think Jennifer Lawrence does a decent job in the lead role, but I never really got behind her character. Overall, this is a boring and convoluted espionage movie that tries to be edgy with explicit and violent content, but ultimately is a bit of a snooze fest and a letdown. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Jelisije J A slow paced engaging story of a women being trained by the russian government to be a spy all the while you could never truly know what side she ill be on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/25 Full Review Irith M Waste of time to watch this messy script. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
