What to Know

Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint There is only so much Jennifer Lawrence can do in this set up. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Linda Marric HeyUGuys Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Rated: 3/5 Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Mo Muzammal Vague Visages In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Rated: 2/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM [Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Bill D Hard to imagine what a movie requires for it to reach an audience. 'Red Sparrow' is similar to 'Anna' in that a female has to fight her way out through a system forced upon her to attain the freedom she seeks. Both movies had a compelling story line, female heroine, loads of action, and both movies received mediocre reviews. While the #1 movie this week is Hit Man, receiving 97% rating on RT, which I saw only last week and I can't remember anything about the movie only that I thought it a waste of time while watching it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Rory M Umm... Not badly acted or directed with some well written scenes and tension but oh my god.(All of the Russian accents are bad btw) Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review roger s I had never, in my entire life, seen such a stereotypical and prejudiced view of our brothers, who make up the Russian people. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review maggie b I Loved this movie. Exciting. Cringe worthy. Sexy. Intriguing. Clever. Suspenseful. Complex. Worth rewatching. I got a couple descriptions online but they fit so well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/24 Full Review Luca C A very enjoyable spy thriller with impeccable cinematography and performances. I was hooked the whole time! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Georgan G I found this a very realistic spy thriller. While some may the sexual exploits a bit much, I think that this is how many spies get information. The torture and lack of trust were believable, as well.
