What to Know

Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint There is only so much Jennifer Lawrence can do in this set up. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Linda Marric HeyUGuys Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Rated: 3/5 Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Mo Muzammal Vague Visages In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Rated: 2/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM [Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Kat L The well-edited opening scene was great - promising a slick sexy thriller. Instead, the movie was gloomily lit, glacially paced, and the sex scenes consisted of appalling sexual assaults, bizarre incestuous tones, and chemistry-free encounters with an implausible romantic interest. The so-called intelligence service training - nor the actual job - didn't include cool gadgets or nifty fighting skills, it solely taught gratuitous nudity. Neither did the film offer any interesting or complex to say about this abusive system. It's also disappointing that the movie had a top-notch cast, but they were largely wasted speaking American or British English with a wildly varied Russian accents in sluggish monotony - and I didn't care about any of the characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review Theode A The movie was brutal and gruesome, because of that i liked the movie. The story in another way was not so good, because sometimes i didnt quite understand it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Christine B It was enjoyable and moved pretty fast. For sure a movie that is interesting enough to hold your attention for a movie night if you are looking for something different. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Jack T Enjoyable movie with decent script, and JL is awesome as always. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Tony S Jennifer Lawrence does very well playing a young Russian spy. There are some gruesome scenes that appear authentic to the rough and tumble of the spy game. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Audience Member Firstly, Jennifer Lawerence is incredible. This movie is so worth watching, do not look at the score it's a good movie. I was engaged the entire time and loved all the twist, surprises, confronting bits, all of it.
