What to Know

Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint There is only so much Jennifer Lawrence can do in this set up. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Linda Marric HeyUGuys Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Rated: 3/5 Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Mo Muzammal Vague Visages In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Rated: 2/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM [Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Rob O I enjoyed it a lot. Apparantly some people find the story convoluted, but I think they are just not used anymore to spy stories with a smart plot. Gotten too much used to a lot of running and shooting and jumping off roofs. I certainly was not surprised by the ending. Made sense to me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Zed O The ending made the intelligence community seem not so intelligent. It was like a comedian trying to tell a 3 part joke with a great setup and a fantastic punchline but somehow messes up the build up thereby making the joke come out somewhat flat and JL’s stellar performance couldn’t make up for that. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review oh g This feels like it was written by a few writers who didn't each get to see the entire script. The plot constantly derailed itself, and whilst Jennifer is stunning throughout, even she couldn't carry this one. Not deep enough, and yet way too drawn out in parts, and thoroughly nonsensical. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review JEFF B this is a challenging and compelling thriller. there are many twists and turns; even having watched it three times, i'm still not sure i could tell the entire story. i'm sure some people found it confusing, but jennifer lawrence is wonderful, as is jeremy irons and joel edgerton. an excellent nuanced thriller. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review bob c Plenty on gratuitous sex and violence. But too slow to catch a cold Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Khrystie C Whoever said this was a good movie count your days. It was slow, boring and super long for nothing, the twist was disapointing and the supposed dark scene were actually pretty boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
