What to Know

Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Go to Full Review

There is only so much Jennifer Lawrence can do in this set up. Go to Full Review

Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Go to Full Review

In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Go to Full Review

Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Go to Full Review

[Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Go to Full Review

Ryan S @NoSleepMonday 6d The only thing good is Jennifer Lawrence character See more Shioka O Oct 18 We all know Jennifer Lawrence's beauty, but this movie itself is unlikeable. See more Richard D Oct 9 Jennifer Lawrence's accent was brutal! Her acting was also bad. The whole woman power beating up men twice their size was completely delusional. Her getting revenge on her uncle was a cool twist but it can't save this movie from all the other really bad script choices. See more Mark B. @CaptainSunshine Sep 29 Pretty good! A clear eyed portrayal of the spy game and modern Russia, but the alterations in the storyline from the (excellent) book are off putting. Still, better than most. See more Ti H. @Tisha Sep 13 Well, ell's bells... I dunno what to say. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie See more Kat L Sep 8 The well-edited opening scene was great - promising a slick sexy thriller. Instead, the movie was gloomily lit, glacially paced, and the sex scenes consisted of appalling sexual assaults, bizarre incestuous tones, and chemistry-free encounters with an implausible romantic interest. The so-called intelligence service training - nor the actual job - didn't include cool gadgets or nifty fighting skills, it solely taught gratuitous nudity. Neither did the film offer any interesting or complex to say about this abusive system. It's also disappointing that the movie had a top-notch cast, but they were largely wasted speaking American or British English with a wildly varied Russian accents in sluggish monotony - and I didn't care about any of the characters.
