What to Know

Critics Consensus

Appropriately enough, Renoir offers viewers a drama of sumptuous beauty -- which is more than enough to offset its frustratingly slow pace and rather thinly written screenplay.

Donald Clarke Irish Times You would need a soul of potash not to savour the delicious fauna and flattering southern light. But the film never gets far beyond the decorative. Rated: 3/5 Jun 30, 2013 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies The story falters when it runs through its very traditional, even hackneyed arcs ... Rated: 2/5 Jun 27, 2013 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension Unlike the work of the men who bear the surname - one a painter at the end of his life, the other a great filmmaker in the making - Renoir the film appears to have almost no imperative for existing. Audience Member Watching paint dry - an apt old saying. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member It's very pretty. Like a painting, take away the meaning you wish. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Frances H The visual beauty of this film glows much like the paintings of Renoir, and for someone who loves both the paintings of the father and the films of the son, this was a moving film about both life and art. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/20 Full Review Bernard K Well done, interesting story, and it's all accurate! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/30/19 Full Review Audience Member Un film qui tient difficilement l'attention du spectateur malgre ses moments de beaute visuelle. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member If it's shot in the south of France it's worth a look, like Cotillard & Crowe in "A Good Year" - because things are atmospheric & inviting for a couple of hours with a good cup of Arabica java or a Dubonnet. No exception here in what purports to be a near end-of-life docudrama on the beloved painter. Beautifully realized in French (subtitled), it's interesting. But like cognac & chocolates it's best savored at one's leisure, breeze through the leaves. Everyone is nicely cast, especially Christa, a tempestuous beauty revealed a few times in birthday glory. So, the film's right for some - with a Desplat soundtrack (good) - but definitely not for the Marvel crowd even tho' some of those are enjoyed by this correspondent, too. (Note: The french is spoken so fast that the subtitles also move quickly. So, to let the eye linger on the beautiful scenes, it's necessary to back-up 10 or 20-secs rather frequently.)
