Revenge slices and dices genre tropes, working within an exploitation framework while adding a timely -- yet never less than viscerally thrilling -- feminist spin.

Scott Tobias Variety With her stylish and bloody rape-revenge thriller, French first-timer Coralie Fargeat turns a disputable subgenre upside down. Dec 26, 2018 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Rape. Blood. Desert. Blood. Death. Blood. Drugs. Did I mention blood?Revenge, directed by Coralie Fargeat, is the French rape-revenge film you've been waiting for. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com A stunning reinvention of the rape-revenge exploitation film that had me sitting at the edge of my seat first frame to last. Rated: 3.5/4 May 31, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Revenge is a promising first film and, with any luck, perhaps Fargeat will approach her next film with more of an eye on instilling some dimensionality into her characters to achieve a stronger sense of catharsis. Selin B If you have time to waste go ahead and watch it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Victor E Some people are comparing it to the substance.. but this is not good: boring Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Michelle S The first ~25 minutes were so sloppy! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Matt P Interesting how this film has a negative audience rating yet movies like Strange Darling have such a high score. Some people taking issue with having to suspend disbelief, yet do not apply the same criticism toward films like John Wick. I thought this movie was a blast. Coralie Fargeat is 2/2 for visually stunning, blood-soaked entertainment. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Jamie S "The desert is sublime, but merciless with the careless." What a hard-fckn-core film! Can't recommend this highly enough, definitely going in my top 3 for 2018 (maybe #1 👀). Immediately locked in with some sick opening shots (the aviators reflection is 👌). The film continues to be styled in the coolest way, with an epic colour palette and some of the wickedest framing of shots. Coralie Fargeat is flexing all over the place 💪 The rotting apple is one of many powerful visuals. Probably the coolest bloody tattoo in all of cinema!? The pacing is absolutely perfect. You are never bored, you always feel the tension, but it ebbs and flows beautifully towards a heartpumping finale. I love vengeance cinema and this subverts that while also giving me hints of Kill Bill. So satisfying. Men are the worst, I think centuries of evidence can confirm this. Why was I left wishing the Less Than Jake song 'Jen Doesn't Like Me Anymore' had played during the credits 🤣 'The Substance' brought me here and I am so fckn glad.
