Empire Magazine Expertly executed example of a golden time in British cinema - one to savour. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2013 Full Review Variety Staff Variety This is a high grade horror film. Jul 22, 2008 Full Review David Parkinson Time Out In one of his best performances, Cushing plays on the ambiguity of the central character, so that the Baron becomes a kind of Wildean martyr, alternating between noble defiance and detached cruelty. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof The ability to synthesize makes 'The Revenge of Frankenstein' put the most interesting suggestions on the table. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 28, 2019 Full Review Isabel Quigly The Spectator Vivid colour and close-ups reached the lowest level to which we were obliged to crawl; but to protest against such films, in these days of the boom in horror, is like trying to put out lightning with a candle-snuffer. Jul 20, 2018 Full Review Film4 Cushing's cool demeanour and grace were ideally suited to his role as the quietly manic Baron and he gives a chillingly subtle performance. Greg L Love these old atmospheric British made films. And Peter Cushing is great as always and absolutely perfect for this role. I remember watching these old films when I was a kid with my chemistry and dissection kits. Great memories. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Joel H I wondered how they were going to make a sequel to The Curse of Frankenstein, considering how that movie ended, but The Revenge of Frankenstein somehow pulled it off. This story is similar, but it’s an entirely different creature than the original film. Peter Cushing, as to be expected, gives a fantastic performance, even if the other characters surrounding him are mostly one-dimensional. And despite the fact that it’s only a few minutes longer than the first film, the plot plods along at a much slower pace. Nevertheless, The Revenge of Frankenstein is another solid entry in this Hammer Film series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/24 Full Review Daniel C. M Worse than it's predecessor. While it's new and innovative ideas are welcoming, it fails in the execution with it's lackluster and disappoiting script and pacing. It took me three sittings to get through this movie. Just skip this one. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Dick C It's a very good motion picture, The Revenge of Frankenstein, 1958...all my credits go to the Character Actor, Peter Cushing as Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review DanTheMan 2 The fact that The Revenge of Frankenstein was released less than a month after Dracula, should have me worried. But Hammer continue to deliver and ended up producing a sequel on par with its already fantastic predecessor. Although, I can't tell you how odd it is to see Francis Matthews headlining, having been so used to hearing him as Captain Scarlet, it's incredibly disconcerting but equally exciting as he delivers a fantastic performance alongside a continually great Peter Cushing. Cushing plays on the ambiguity of the central character, so that the Baron becomes a kind of Wildean martyr, alternating between noble defiance and detached cruelty. His chemistry and friendship with Matthews' Doctor Kleve is a wonderfully magnificent and does make me lament that Matthews' didn't go on to reprise the role in sequels. All the same production qualities seen previously are carried over, the gorgeous use of colour and Jack Asher's exquisite photography combine with a tighter, sophisticated and intelligent script married with an injection of black humour which is more than welcomed. It trods off the established path of Frankenstein tropes and eschews routine horrifics by putting a lens on its people rather than on it's sympathetic monster. With plenty of shocks and terrifying imagery, The Revenge of Frankenstein is a marvellous follow-up and another classic from Hammer's extensive library. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review deke p Very good. The critics' praise is justified. Saw it first time ever, on TV , Oct 2021 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
