J. R. Jones Chicago Reader If you can handle the torrent of grisly violence, you'll find yourself royally entertained by this Hong Kong actioner. Wayne K A leading contender for the title of bloodiest films ever made, Riki-Oh is possibly the most comic booky film I’ve ever seen. The scenarios, the shot composition, the way the actors are arranged, it looks like a comic book come to life, and the violence is even more cartoonish than you could possibly imagine. The film has an infamously bad English dub which I seen years ago, but the version I seen recently was subtitled. There’s nothing especially strong about the screenplay or the story, which is your typical ‘Man gets locked up in a notorious prison and has to use violence to survive’ narrative. I’ll give the film credit for not having the lead swear an oath of nonviolence. beforehand, saving us the crushing inevitability of them breaking it as soon as the going gets tough. The one thing you come to this film for is the gore, and you certainly wont be disappointed in that department. Limbs are chopped off, heads are smashed, jaws are shattered, eyes are removed, all in graphic, unflinching detail. The funniest aspect for me was the quick cutting to a variety of dummies during the violent scenes, which just made them all the more ridiculous. I could easily watch it again, and it’s the kind of movie that I’d only recommend to a friend if they’d let me watch it with them, just to see their reaction. If bulging muscles and gallons of blood are your things, you can’t go wrong with Riki-Oh. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Audience Member This is the bloodiest film I’ve ever seen, even bloodier than Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Inglourious Basterds. The story is dope too, I kinda want to read the manga even though I’m unfamiliar with manga at all. I loved this movie and I genuinely think you all will too. 4/5 stars. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review t s I thought that the blood was good! I enjoyed when the bad guy turned into a bigger badder guy. I was confused by the elephant killing gun. I think that if it was in American I would understand the plot better. I did not understand the point of the son. I wanna learn how to play the flute on a leaf. Overall I give 4 stars. VERY NICE! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Ultra Violent over the top action. Some scenes haven't aged too well but it all adds to its charm. And just when you thinking it can't get anymore ridiculous it does! Very entertaining and a classic piece of Hong Kong Splatter cinema Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Audience Member It is rare that a movie is made that makes you rethink what cinema can be. I watched this movie back in the 90s and probably haven't seen it in over 20 years. But I can remember almost everything about it. That is the mark of a great movie. In the first 15 minutes, you'll cringe laugh and probably give it an eye-roll, but with each passing scene, you'll grow more and more fond if it's belly-gut craziness and sheer audacity. If any film buff stumbles upon this review, trust me you won't be wasting two hours of your life and you definitely won't regret it!
