Jorge Luis Borges Sur The Road Back is undeniably inferior to All Quiet on the Western Front. Its climactic moment is also a battle... The other scenes, it seems to me, are entirely forgettable. Dec 15, 2021 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Despite Whale's usual great direction, it's a diluted narrative without the punch that was intended. Audience Member The quality of the version I saw is so miserable; that, combined with Universal's brutal recutting of the film when it was clear that the anti-German tone would alienate a lot of viewers, makes it impossible to really appreciate it. Whale is said to have believed the original edit was his best work. I rather doubt that, but I do believe it was probably better than what we have access to today.
