Audience Member The quality of the version I saw is so miserable; that, combined with Universal's brutal recutting of the film when it was clear that the anti-German tone would alienate a lot of viewers, makes it impossible to really appreciate it. Whale is said to have believed the original edit was his best work. I rather doubt that, but I do believe it was probably better than what we have access to today. Jorge Luis Borges Sur The Road Back is undeniably inferior to All Quiet on the Western Front. Its climactic moment is also a battle... The other scenes, it seems to me, are entirely forgettable.
