Critics Consensus

Robin Hood robs from rich source material, but is ultimately just another poor attempt to needlessly gussy up a classic tale with amped-up action and modern special effects.

It's silly stuff, so insubstantial that even after any vicarious thrills over the medieval one percent getting shafted, the viewer is likely to feel he or she is the one being fleeced. Go to Full Review

Ink C 1h Watch the show on MGM instead See more @Lana1314 23h This isn’t a masterpiece, and I don’t think it was meant to be. Robin Hood is a modern retelling that puts its own spin on a familiar story, and for what it is, it works. A lot of the criticism seems to come from people going in with overly high expectations or comparing it too closely to older versions. If you allow it to stand on its own as an adaptation. My main critique would be Jamie Foxx’s character. The performance wasn’t bad, but it felt like it could have been tightened up. There were moments of overacting that slightly pulled me out of the film, though not enough to derail it. I’ve also seen complaints about the wardrobe, but nothing stood out to me as distracting or immersion-breaking. I wasn’t watching with a hyper-focus on costumes, and nothing felt glaringly off. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, my daughter enjoyed it as well, and I’d recommend it, just don’t expect a masterpiece. Take it for what it is, and it’s a fun, modern take on Robin Hood See more Matrix K @ZanderDarko Dec 13 It's a good pop fun type of film, I loved the beginning with robin hood being in foreign lands and they mix it with sword in shield and what feels like American soldiers mash up using / carrying arrows like guns, No it's not godfather or Schindler lists but it's more popcorn fun like the mummy or 13th warrior these type of films that you can switch off your movie brain and have fun. See more MCM B Nov 10 I suspect that many who "despise" this movie are offended by the negative portrayal of the Church, Clergy, and the Crusades. The level of money & power greed portrayed is actually not far off the mark through most of history. The weird mix of costume styles was inconsistent enough to draw you out of the story (especially the big party scene), and it's certainly not perfect. But I enjoyed it, and I felt like the background info was indeed deeper and held more social commentary. I'm not really into action movies, but the sequences seemed fairly imaginative to me, and it was an easy watch. See more Jayne S Nov 2 Well great job guys you screwed up another one of my favorite stories! Not only was the acting crap but all the extra pagan versus Christian crap made a bad series worse.. I was looking forward to this so much and if this is the best MGM plus has to offer I might drop my subscription.. See more Blu B Oct 29 The worst Robin Hood adaptation by a mile. This is everything wrong with "modern" filmmaking in a nutshell. The biggest strike here is the complete....absolute complete mind boggling misunderstanding of the source material. There is no fun or charm to ANYTHING here. Literally Nothing. This is making Robin Hood into like a V for Vendetta, Watch Dogs, Jason Bourne, Christopher Nolan type anarchist action hero. The cinematography is horrifcally bad. On top of being lifeless, dull, or so dark you can barely see anything the costumes, haircuts, fighing styles, and direction in general is like this takes place in modern day. It's completely off from it's source material and one could argue it's almost a borderline middle finger. It makes the Ridley Scott prequel look light hearted in a sense. The acting is terrible. No humor, light hearted fun, or fairy tale feel. Everyone talks super serious, no emotions, and just blends in. Robin Hood, the bad guys, the new Lady Marion are all terrible. Foxx isn't that good either. Music isn't good either and doesn't fit at all. Editing isn't good and the pacing is horifically bad. The basic story makes sense up way to the first half. Than it starts jumping around between a convuluted plot by the bad guys, the romance, Robin Hood's uprising and tons of action that is so over the top and "modern" that it becomes incoherent at points in the end as well. The rapid machine gun like firing of arrows, lack of any real swashbuckling, and no fairy tale like scenes is so misguided. They really need to take a hard look in the mirror and figure out what the source material here is about and not make anymore. Completely terrible. Skip this. See more Read all reviews
