Kate Muir Times (UK) While Robinson Crusoe on Mars is more a kitsch curio than a classic movie, there is much entertainment to be had comparing this 1964 story of "a lone astronaut pitted against all odds beyond this Earth" with The Martian. Rated: 3/5 Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof Prodigiously combining tricks, ranging from superimposed planes to large paintings, of extraordinary beauty, the director manages to convey a certain feeling of suffocation and restlessness. Audience Member 5 stars for the nostalgia and appreciation of science and space adventures for over 50 years. Implausible? Unscientific? Cheesy? Yes yes yes. Lets me revel while watching MCU, DC and Star Wars movies, first with my children and now my grandkids. It's a glorious honor to have witnessed and still be witnessing cinematic progress. Plus Adam West as a ghost. What more can there be? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review christopher c. m Let's start with a minor nitpick, it's the exact story of Robinson Crusoe except the main character isn't named Robinson Crusoe why? Now more serious issues. The science is insanely stupid, even for a 1964 movie. The idea of able to breath for 15 minutes? Ah, no. That's as dumb as Lacy Warfield in "Superman IV" breathing in space. I first saw this once as a kid on TV and thought I was boring. Seeing it through the eyes of an adult, I now know it's boring. The event that started this is a meteor going to crash into the main ship, so they just jump out without trying to avoid it and the fact it missed means that interstellar travel is possible but basic radar stopped working and a computer dumber than a SIRI? How the HELL did they spend a two MILLION dollar budget? Not actors or effects. Considering all the recycled props from better movies. The meteor that doesn't hit the ship is from "It Came From Outer Space" The alien ships that fire at the planet is a repackaged ship from "War of the Worlds" copied 3 times. Considering adjusting for inflation that made the budgets at least 25 million, it doesn't appear on screen. It's dumb boring and a waste of money and your time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s When Commander Draper crash lands on Mars, he finds himself alone in a desolate and arid landscape. Robinson Crusoe on Mars is an intriguing (at least initially) story of survival, filmed in brilliant Technicolor and filled with beautiful landscapes. However, interest may wane over the latter portion of the movie as the cheap special effects, irritating music score and the improbable introduction of another character (a space slave, no less) bog things down significantly. It's certainly a step above the average science fiction fare of the same period, but that's not saying much, is it? At the very least, you can catch Adam West in a small role early in the film before he hit it big with Batman a couple of years later. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review ogn d gone are the days of the saturday matinee Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/05/18 Full Review Audience Member For its time this film isn't too bad. The effects are laughable, but apart from that it's quite an interesting film about isolation and survival. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Better and smarter than its b-movie title would suggest, it's basically "The Martian" before we actually knew anything about anything. Sometimes slow (when the slave first shows up) but often just steadily and wonderfully unsettling (ash from sky, dreams), fans of the original Star Trek series or just old sci-fi will get a kick out of this thoughtfully philosophical and curiously entertaining stranded isle drama.
