Critics Consensus

A less satisfying rehash that generally lives down to the negative stereotype of sequels, RoboCop 2 tries to deliver more of everything and ends up with less.

Audience Member Wasnt bad it got more deep in the story between Robocops realationship over his family Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Carson P This sequal to the 1987 classic action masterpiece is a letdown first of all you know how much they made sequals to classic 80s/90s action films and few were as good and some even sucked really really badly that moviegoers walked out on them, ( transformers, Independence Day, escape from New York anyone? anyone ) but unlike most this One came out when it was still during the era and even before classics like Independence Day and bad boys came out. And it just Los all the charm of the original first of all the thing I hate most about this sequal from 1990 three years after the first one is that robo is treated as a punching bag nearly much of the film he gets bullied on first in an arcade club where he says something like is this a cop place or whatever because it made no sense then everyone yelled and threw popcorn and other junk at him and later is disparaged by the criminal gang led by Caine afterwards he melfunctions and doesn’t behave like a normal police officer and instead acts rather like someone who wants things cleaned or having children safe and making sure no one smokes, ( did you also notice a scene where he ruined a fun for children by switching off a fire hydrant that spews water like a sprinkler ) it’s only after he electrocuted himself does he act like a police trying to stop evil, that fight with him and the robot Caine was cool I guess and in this and the third film from 1993 ( which is arguably much worse despite that it had the musical score by basil pouledoris from the first) he did have some kind of flame thrower weapon which I thought was cool but that’s all I can compliment about this and the third film because they make among any list of worst action movie sequals of all time robocop may have succeeded well with being an iconic action blockbuster classic in 87 but it fails at making itself into a good trilogy. At least Peter seller reprised his role here but he couldn’t save this, not to mention the other returning charachters including sgt reed and that OCP excecutive Donald Johnson ( who both also were in the third ) arent given much to do and especially with the old man ( who wasn’t in the third ) the same guy who complimented robo for defeating dick jones in the first film doesn’t seem like he is aware or knows nor cares of robo perhaps they could have made this better if it showed him rooting for robo as well as robo protecting him and his company along with Donald Johnson like they are his bosses that run all the other police officers, Ann Louis the partner of robo does get interactions with him though as she still works with him since she was assigned with him in the first. Cain to be honest was an over the top ridiculous villain where he is said to be ambitious as trying to commit the worst crimes but he is played without the charisma that would make villains portrayed menacingly. This and the third sequals of this short lived trilogy were just abysmal and depressing to watch as of they were made to rehash and spoof the original like it was a remake of it but without the charm and charachter development the first had and as a result I left with a bitter taste in my mouth both this and the third had terrible script, dull and pointless villains charachters performed without charisma or emotion they all acted like they did care for one or the other and like most of them became villains, and it was just a miserable experience I had watching a sequal to one of my favorite action films of all time. The 80s and 90s were iconic two decades for action films and other blockbusters not only because they gave us the best in them nor just because of how good they made them because of their simple tone and elegant style and looks to them but because they showed us what life in those two decades ( which were the final ones in the 20th century ) with the buildings, cars, streets and atmosphere. as it even represents how they even took pictures at the time and what photos of life in them looked like. And for a movie that has that like the original it disappoints on just about every level in the end I do not reccomend this sequal nor the third one after it. I suggest save your money and stick to the original which was much much bettter across the board from its opening acts to the terrific ending of him being praised by the excecutives and being accepted as a top police cop. And pretend that the events of this and third one didn’t really happen and that everything was safe and there was no major criminal threat to the state. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Philippe L Not as good as the first one but it has it's moments. Better than the third one at least Peter weller is still in it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review David C No me gustó que lo pintaran de color azul con toques morados la batalla final es mi chafa los efectos no son buenos tiene el final más malo Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Keith N Gosh darn it! Not enough of that magic, t's good but come on you can do better! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Killian M An enjoyable yet familiar follow up to the first Robocop. It delivers exactly what you left wanting more of from the first one with arguably better cinematography and direction and a great performance from Peter Welling. The villain while nothing amazing definitely is more memorable than the first. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
