What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its exuberant silliness is almost enough to make up for its utter inconsequentiality, but Rock of Ages is ultimately too bland and overlong to justify its trip to the big screen.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Really, it's like a longer, louder version of Glee or American Idol, but with actors who can't sing rather than singers who can't act. Plus, it rocks you like a hurricane. Rated: D- Aug 15, 2013 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com It's easy to see how Rock of Ages became a crowd-pleaser on Broadway, where audiences got caught up in the energy of '80s hit songs performed live. Jun 22, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The best musicals are those with songs that develop naturally within a story instead of obligatorily filling every moment with yet another song. This is not one of them. Jose L This is a movie I have watched multiple times. Tom Cruise is actually singing the songs in his scenes, and he’s actually decent. He nails Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar On Me. They were there when the scene was filmed and absolutely approved. Julianne Hughes is beautiful and her vocals are amazing. Malin Akerman is looking like an uber-model in her supporting role. I keep forgetting this movie is over a decade old. I even bought the movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/25 Full Review Munchie A It’s decent. The songs land. The overacting is intentional and funny. Fans of the Broadway play will be disappointed with the removal of the original villains. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Cassidy W Don’t take yourself too seriously. This is a fun movie to watch and if you look into the work that some of these actors put into their parts it’s awesome. The soundtrack is great and it’s definitely just a feel good movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Alichia B Rock of Ages – A Fun and Entertaining Musical Experience "Rock of Ages" was an excellent movie that I thoroughly enjoyed! What really stood out to me was the fact that the actors performed their own singing—it added an authentic and unique touch to the film. The music was fantastic, featuring classic rock hits that made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I loved how the movie didn’t take itself too seriously. It had the perfect balance of fun, energy, and nostalgia, making it an entertaining watch from start to finish. The cast did a great job bringing their characters to life, and the overall vibe was lighthearted and engaging. If you're a fan of rock music and musicals, this is definitely a must-watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Dustin R This movie is completely underrated! A must see for anyone with nostalgia for the eighties! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Richard W First time I watched it I wasn’t sure how I felt. So watched it again and just loved it. It’s just silly fun. Do not take it serious and just have fun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
