Critics Consensus

Like its title, Rock Star is rather generic, being not so much about the heavy metal scene than about rock cliches and formula.

C. E Rockstar (2001) is a beauty of a movie about the rock/metal band scene and the fans that grew up idolizing them. Not to be taken too seriously though. This was one of my & best friend's movie to watch! (RIP Adam Humble) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Test T I enjoyed watching this movie on DVD recently. It's a fantasy come true story about a guy who gets a chance to become his rock star hero, and eventually realises that some dreams are better left unrealised. As you'd expect, it's full of extreme characters and behaviours that only rock stars could get away with, but that's what makes it fun to watch. I found the rock music very agreeable, and the whole film has an infectious energy that is hard to resist. I thought Mark Wahlburg was very plausible as the rock star, and Jennifer Aniston played his manager/girl friend perfectly. Timothy Spall also stood out for me as an excellent choice for the band's tour manager. I found the film very well paced, with plenty of diverse scenes to maintain the viewers attention. Highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Petros T It goes by easily, the cast notably features actual rockers, the concert sequences are pretty exciting, and strong moments include Emily's side story and Chris and Mats's last couple of scenes. However, it often feels like a collection of cliches (oh look, a TV thrown out of a window!) as if an outsider put together a bunch of headlines while the characters take a back seat. I'm sure Ripper's story was interesting - and real - enough, so it's a pity they went with this highly fictionalized take. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review J B A great story that shows men the negetive side effect I f their drive for success, the need to balance their life. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Sergio C A gem of a movie really underrated they could of pick hammerfall to be in it.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/22 Full Review Audience Member In a comedic sense, this early 2000's film actually manages to hit here and there. The story and "romance" barely have a hint of a cautionary-tale angle that saves the narrative from being purely stock and pedestrian. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
