      Critics Consensus

Mixed reviews for Guy Ritchie's return to his London-based cockney wideboy gangster movie roots, but most agree, it's a step in the right direction following two major turkeys. Read critic reviews

Say what you want about Guy Ritchie, he knows what he does best. Which is why he went back to his patented Lock, Stock formula once more after a couple films that received extremely negative reviews. RocknRolla isn't fresh or new by any means, but it's still a wild, fun filled ride. It starts off a little shaky, quickly cutting from character to character and is extremely difficult to follow. It takes about 25-30 minutes or so before it settles down and makes more sense. Once it does settle down though (and when I say settle down, I mean in the Guy Ritchie way) it gets better and gets to the same fun we've come to love in Snatch and Lock, Stock. The characters are their colorful selves, all of whom are supported by excellent performances from the whole cast. Those who stand out are all three of "The Wild Bunch" (Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy) and Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson). Going with these guys, you also have the eccentric "dead" rock-star Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell), shady accountant Stella (Thandie Newton), narrator Archy (Mark Strong) and Quid's managers Roman and Mickey (Jeremy Piven and Ludacris). Quite a lineup you have there, and all of them are great. RocknRolla is, however, noticeably weaker than its two brothers of Lock, Stock and Snatch. It feels as if Ritchie is trying way too hard to emulate those movies instead of letting it come to him naturally like it did before. The laughs don't quite quite as often, but when it does get its laughs, it's certainly great. Scenes like when One-Two (Butler) discovers a deep secret about Handsome Bob (Hardy) or Cole's (Wilkinson) discovery that he's been robbed are absolutely hilarious and compete with anything you can find in Ritchie's previous trips to this formula. Overall, RocknRolla is a slick and fun ride. It doesn't have Snatch's brisk pace and endless quotes and laughs, or Lock Stock's craziness, but it's still a solid crime flick and pure Guy Ritchie.

Some words to describe RocknRolla would be fun, dramedy, and raw. The story has a typical Guy Ritchie feel and proves that he can still make solid gangster films. Don't look at the RT percentage for this film because its definitely a positive and critics are fools for criticizing it.

had interesting characters and the film was well cast but the story was a bit over the shop for my liking. Ritchie is trying to hard to create another lock stock.
