This is a brave film, a unique way of exploring a taboo topic. Go to Full Review

There are slow bits, as Baumane delves into stories that are less interesting than others. But overall, her family history is rife with complex characters, and she brings them all to life in a loving, if scrutinizing, way. Go to Full Review

Signe Baumane... wrote and directed this feature-length animation about her family history of bipolar disorder, and despite its thorough treatment of the subject, it's surprisingly lighthearted and free of self-regard. Go to Full Review

Latvian animator Signe Baumane's film not only imbues tragic subject matter with beautiful imagery, but balances the film with a certain amount of levity. Go to Full Review

We have had few if any first-person accounts from "crazy" women filmmakers about how they see their own lives and minds. Animator and artist Signe Baumane's first feature, Rocks in My Pockets, seeks to change that situation. Go to Full Review

07/08/2019 Deeply personal, darkly funny animated memoir about family and mental illness, told with beautiful, surreal animation See more 02/21/2017 It is as good as it looks. If you've watched the trailer and thought that it looks interesting, it does not fail. See more 02/08/2016 This movie is filled with rich, interesting characters and it perfectly describes what it feels like to deal with mental illness and what the thought process of someone who struggles with it is like. Recommended for anyone who's interested in learning more about depression or mental illness in general or for anybody who's just looking to watch a darkly funny and refreshingly honest film. See more 11/13/2015 A Latvian history-lesson done with an impressive technique. The story, that for me is unknown, is mixed with fiction. The plot goes from historical stuff to the mind of the director. She is depressed, suicidal and there is not much delight here. Familial mental illness are other keywords here. A brave film, lovely crafted and something very original. There are several things that I don't like here. It's really hectic - the pace is superfast. It's also a bit tiring after a while. A monotone story that goes on with only one voice is demanding. Signe Baumane has done everything here. She is the director, the writer, the voice, the editor and the animator. Very impressive debut indeed. 6 out of 10 mental issues. See more 08/07/2015 It is a funny and daring movie with a haunting story and beautiful animation. See more 08/07/2015 I thought this movie was well done, although it tackles a difficult subject. It handles it with humor, but lightly. If someone in your family suffers from depression, or if you do, I highly recommend this little film. See more Read all reviews
