Marina, 18, orphaned at a young age, must travel to Spain's Atlantic coast to obtain a signature for a scholarship application from the paternal grandparents she has never met. She navigates a sea of new aunts, uncles, and cousins, uncertain whether she will be embraced or met with resistance. Stirring long-buried emotions, reviving tenderness, and uncovering unspoken wounds tied to the past, Marina pieces together the fragmented and often contradictory memories of the parents she barely remembers.

Kenji Fujishima Slant Magazine Carla Simón’s instinct for sketching in crucial narrative and character detail within a naturalistic context remains as unerring as ever. Rated: 3/4 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Justin Chang The New Yorker Simón brings down the emotional barriers with graceful assurance and an abundance of sun-dappled coastal imagery, though here and there she hints at a level of formal daring that may achieve fuller realization in films to come. Jun 2, 2025 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine This is graceful, quietly intelligent filmmaking. May 28, 2025 Full Review Liselotte Vanophem Geek Vibes Nation While Llúcia Garcia leads Romería in a mesmerising way, surrounded by enchanting cinematography, Carla Simón’s film feels fractured and slow. Rated: 6.5/10 Oct 9, 2025 Full Review Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews Appropriately, for a film enamoured with its sea setting and boats (its main character’s name even means “of the sea”), Romería is a gentle wave of a film. And it has enough style to keep you invested in Simón’s deeply personal story. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 6, 2025 Full Review Emily DuGranrut In Review Online All of this leaves Simón’s film with the lingering impression of a personal passion project that has failed to fully transcend its intimate genesis, despite the director’s best attempt to zhuzh the material with flits of style. Andrea B It's a film all about getting a scholarship. You don't know who the people are, there's no good soundtrack, and you don't know if what's happening is real or just in the girl's head. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Nicolas J After Summer 1993, this feels like Simon is standing on common ground. Beautifully shot, a nice film , but it feels toothless, just... nice. It won’t hurt you, but you won’t remember it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
