Wealthy, eccentric Rosie Lord (Rosalind Russell) does as she pleases, spending her fortune freely in pursuit of a good time. Determined not to let her give away their inheritance, daughters Mildred (Audrey Meadows) and Edith (Vanessa Brown) have Rosie institutionalized, hoping to have her declared mentally incompetent. With the help of her granddaughter, Daphne (Sandra Dee), and lawyer Oliver Stevenson (Brian Aherne), Rosie goes to court to defend her sanity.
