Rusty, the trusty German shepherd of teenager Danny Mitchell (Ted Donaldson), is sold by a vagrant pretending to be Rusty's master. Far from home, the dog flees his new owners. He is found injured by little Jeff Neeley (Jimmy Hunt) and his unemployed father, Virgil (Ray Teal). Virgil is seeking work in Danny's hometown when Rusty is spotted. Virgil is then jailed for dognapping, and Jeff is taken in by Danny's family. Young Jeff does his best to clear his father's name.
