Carla Hay Culture Mix Fan fiction meets semi-autobiography in the comedy film Sallywood, a charming but frequently awkward story about a Sally Kirkland superfan getting a job as her assistant. Writer/director Xaque Gruber mixes cornball comedy with witty satire about ageism. Nov 14, 2024 Full Review Charles Johnston Spectrum Culture This experimental biopic – where Sally Kirkland plays herself – is full of charmingly noble intentions, but the end result is a mixed bag. Nov 14, 2024 Full Review Andy Klein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's quite lovable, and Sally Kirkland gives what I'd have to call an egoless performance. Catherine C I found this film at a festival and didn't have great expectations. I was just hoping for a bit of levity on a date night with my husband. But within minutes, this sweet little love story swept me off my feet and kept me smiling - and laughing - for the rest of the evening. Sally Kirkland has still got "it" with her timing and smooth delivery of some incredible laugh lines. Such a joy to see she's still working. And the fact that this film has an autobiographical ring of truth to it - based on the writer/director's real life experiences working for Sally Kirkland - was a delightful filmmaking technique. Can't wait to see what he does next! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Toni Jade C Hilarious and charming loved it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Becca V "Sallywood" is a delightful blend of humor, heart, and a touch of nostalgia, reflecting the director's unique storytelling style. From the opening scene, the vibrant cinematography captures the essence of the characters and their world. The performances are stellar, with Sally Kirkland bringing a charmingly eccentric energy that keeps you fully engaged throughout. The supporting cast adds depth, with each character contributing to the film's rich tapestry of relationships and experiences. The script is sharp and witty, filled with moments that will make you laugh out loud while also prompting reflection on the complexities of friendship and ambition. The pacing is well-structured, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in the storyline without feeling rushed. I appreciate how the director, Xaque Gruber has infused his signature style into this project, creating a film that feels both fresh and familiar. "Sallywood" is not just a film; it’s a heartfelt celebration of creativity and the struggles that come with it. Overall, I highly recommend "Sallywood" to anyone looking for a feel-good movie that balances humor with genuine emotion. It’s delightful joy and a must-see for fans of independent cinema. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Jill K This was a funny heart warming movie with an excellent caste. It was surprising and fun. I smiled throughout almost the whole movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Mindworks F Sallywood honestly portrays the true story of a lucky encounter that leads to an unlikely friendship with an aging actress whom the main character deeply admires. This friendship in turn leads to an unexpected journey through the Hollywood landscape as the main character attempts to navigate the start of his career as a screenwriter in the entertainment industry. Sallywood is a fun little gem of a film that definitely deserves to be seen by a wider audience. This film has a lot of heart and quite a few laughs as well and is overall a good time spent at the movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Vid H Sallywood is the genuine feel-good movie we need right now. It balances humor and heart while telling the true story of an unlikely friendship. Jennifer Tilly is hilarious as the mother of the main character, Eric Roberts is perfect at the sleezy talent agent, and last but not least, Sally Kirkland shines as... herself! Believe it or not, playing yourself is probably one of the hardest things an actor can do for many reasons, but Sally delivers a performance that is as compelling as her Academy Award nominated performance in Anna.
