Great gambler Sam Whiskey (Burt Reynolds) has got his hands on a heist job that's pretty outrageous, even by Wild West standards. A drop-dead-gorgeous woman (Angie Dickinson) wants to quietly give back the gold her husband had stolen, now that he's dead. She approaches Sam to retrieve the gold from the bottom of a river and smuggle it back into the mint. The widow's beauty, and the nice sum she promises him, leave Sam powerless to resist the preposterous proposal.

Audience Member Pretty good one here quite funny recommend it, James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas July 17, 2023 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Tom M A western comedy that never takes itself seriously which makes it work. Reynolds and Dickinson provide the camp and Davis and Walker support the story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/20 Full Review william k Good-natured, but sloppily handled Western comedy is mainly focused on its star, but has not much more to offer. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sam Whiskey is really the beginning of Burt Reynolds' rise to superstardom. He had also been bumming around doing episodes of various TV shows, but never got a real break as a leading man until Sam Whiskey came along. It wasn't enough to push him over the top, but it enough to get him noticed for bigger and more successful projects. Although this movie is billed as a comedy western, the movie never manages to be funny. It attempts to pull off some silly character moments as well as a bit of slapstick, but it all falls pretty flat for the most part. The characters themselves aren't quite fleshed out enough either, leaving the actors with little to do, try as they might. The movie's plot and how it's executed is quite flaccid as well. However, somehow the movie manages to retain some charm, which is mostly due to the presence of its actors, all of whom seem to be more in on the joke than they initially let on at times. Fans of Burt Reynolds' career, especially his early days before his southern-fried persona hit the mainstream, may want to seek it out. Others, however, may not find there's much here to look forward to. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Enjoyable adventure-heist western. Burt Reynolds is pretty much Burt Reynolds and not very different in persona from any of his other films but it works for the comedy value.
