Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times An eloquent coming-of-age drama set in 1930s Sweden that revolves around a spellbinding performance by young Lene Cecilia Sparrok. Jun 29, 2017 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post "Sami Blood" is a beautiful, haunting film, anchored by a startlingly accomplished lead performance. It has the feeling of a distant memory - one that is neither entirely pleasant nor painful, but persistent. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 29, 2017 Full Review Godfrey Cheshire RogerEbert.com The film's success comes from how Kernell's skills as a director match the ambitions of her script. Rated: 3/4 Jun 2, 2017 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast A gorgeous, albeit hard to watch film about internalized self-hatred within Sweden's indigenous population. Features a fantastic child performance by Sparrok, though the framing device featuring old Ella-Marja doesn't work. Rated: 4/5 Apr 19, 2023 Full Review Kip Mooney College Movie Review Depressing, but still impressive. Rated: B Aug 28, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Sami Blood is an extraordinary, deeply felt film. But it is probably the sort of work that can only be done once. Audience Member It takes a coming-of-age story and transform it into something with its own unique flavour. Although, it's also laced in sadness and self-hate. More than just the typical teenage insecurity, it goes far beyond that, when a terrible experience at school sprinkled with an equally terrifying experience once out of school makes a girl completely loathe herself, her culture, and eventually, even her family. The worst part is, you can't even blame her. All you can do is be perplexed at the odd beliefs of the Swedish people of that time, depicted in this film. Odd beliefs aimed at people not even that much different than them, other than a few lifestyle differences and climate differences. It lasts an entire lifetime and it's only with a specific event (I will omit details because it's a spoiler) after she succeeds in Swedish society, disproving the lies she was fed as a teenager, that she realizes that she was wrong, and more imporantly, that the predjudices against her were all very wrong. Good film. :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see. Poignant and sad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Both painful and gorgeous. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent movie! Beautifully shot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review raphael g Good movie. It didn't keep me hooked at all times, and it could use more story after she finally gets the silver belt. But that's just my opinion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant performance by the young lead. Great drama. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/29/18 Full Review Read all reviews
