Audience Member Sarvam - 8/10. Vishnuvardhan is a director who prioritizes visuals over the story usually. His films usually have an amazing flair to them (Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Billa, and Aarambam). Sarvam unfortunately didn't become a huge hit like some of his other films. Though the songs by Yuvan became hits, the movie didn't seem to catch on with audiences. Visually, Sarvam is a really strong film. The cinematography done by Vishnuvardhan's trusted associate Nirav Shah bring an amazing tone and palette for the film's mood. Fun fact, Nirav decided to leave production of Endhiran in order to take up this film. What I really appreciate about the visual aspect of this film is that the cinematography helps give a voice to the story and the performances delivered. It's an interesting film because of it's subject manner. An anthology film focusing on two parallel stories, which tie together because of an accident that involves the lead pair of Arya and Trisha, Sarvam focuses on death and the life that is lived after it by the people affected by it. It's an interesting 180 turn for the director, considering the previous movie he directed was the blockbuster Billa. We see the anguish of a father who has lost his family and seeks revenge on the man who caused him to lose his family (JD Chakravarthy in a really underrated villain performance), and we also see the sorrow and pain felt by a young man who loses the love of his life, only to find purpose when he must protect a child who bears the heart of his former fiance (Arya in one of his most underrated performances). For a romantic thriller, it deals with a lot of darker subject matter. Death is a prevalent topic in the film, and the use of very bright colours in the first half and then a switch to a darker tone in the second half kind of symbollically show how death just envelopes the people involved. Its a shame that the film didn't become a hit, as it was one of my favourite films from 2009 and one of my favourites of that decade. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Apart from the usual commercial contents like misplaced songs and hero winning over villain kind of stuffs, Sarvam can still be considered as a brave attempt from Vishnuvardhan. Though the main theme of the movie was copied from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's '21 grams', the director cleverly merges the parallel stories around it, making it kind of interesting to watch. This movie employs linear style film-making which differs from 21-grams and thus making it more predictable. Romance between Arya and Trisha was pictured perfectly and I thoroughly enjoyed watching their chemistry. There is one scene where Arya breaks down after knowing Trisha accident, it was cleverly handled. On the performance front, both Arya and Trisha were excellent. Chakravarthy did well too. On the whole, it was a good watch. 3/5 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Am empty movie with amazing cinematography Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
