Julian Singleton Cinapse The grand culmination of Koji Shiraishi’s wild defiance of Japanese horror expectations, House of Sayuri is a haunted house fright fest that cleverly balances the fine line between horrifying and hilarious. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2025 Full Review Mike Thorn In Review Online Sayuri promises the gonzo genre mix-up often mastered by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takashi Miike — while it never reaches anything near those heights, it contains plenty of indelible images and moments, and sometimes that's all a good horror movie needs. Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Harris Dang Their Own League House of Sayuri is a fun, clever inversion of Japanese horror from filmmaker Koji Shiraishi that is sure to scare, surprise and touch those who are expecting more than just the normal serving of horror cinema. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 29, 2024 Full Review Mark Schilling Japan Times Sayuri finds a partial solution in Japan’s ero-guro (erotic and grotesque) artistic genre, which shades its humor pitch-black to match the darkness of the deeds on display. Rated: 3/5 Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Pieter-Jan Van Haecke Psychocinematography All Japanese directors who struggle to fluidly interweave different genre-elements within their J-horror narratives should give Koji Shiraishi's House of Sayuri a thorough watch. Gabriel S From mangas to live action, House of Sayuri takes a spin into horror trying to tie in themes of grief and overcoming, manga-heavy tropes, and nice Japanese haunting scenes. It works for what it is, especially considering Director Koji Shiraishi is at the front seat, someone found with the horror genre. The story follows Norio and his family, which recently moved to this new house trying to start fresh and settle in life, a nice country-side, manor style, house that, somehow, someone (I guess the father Akiro) calls a second-hand house. But things quickly turn to worse when a haunting, vengeful spirit starts to stalk them with ultimate violence. Surprisingly, Act I is dark and grim and fast. A lot happens, but fret not, it is only the beginning. When you get to Act II, the story turns into a manga-style redemption story about overcoming grief and growing. Here you see the arc is inverted. Or is it? Watch and see. All I can say is that the story is unexpected for the better. Pet peeves: not sure about the final act's climax — I liked it, but you need to pay attention to the details. If you do pay attention to the ending, you connect the dots. Lose this connection and you will find yourself disliking the story. Again, it is in the details; and the problem here is some people might just miss it for its obscureness. Overall, Sayuri is satisfying, a refreshing take into Asian horror. It won't win an Oscar, nor gain mainstream reach, hell, check out its gross worldwide, but it is a nice gem amongst niche horror and genre fanatics. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/23/25 Full Review Damian M Very fun, The deaths were fantastic, spirit is unnerving, had me invested the whole time, even with the twists It was a good mix. My only complaint is some of the effects towards the end just totally left feild shouldnt have bothered. Great Shimizu film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review acsdoug D I went back and forth on this one. At first I thought, "How many members of your family have to die before you get the hell out of that house?" Then Grandma fights back and i thought that was pretty cool. I thought the ending was rather weak though, so I'm going to pass on the recommendation.
