Christopher Campbell Cinematical Doesn't work as even a broad look at sci-fi film history ... nor does it work completely as a tribute to [Forrest] Ackerman thanks to all the additional figures represented. Rated: 2/5 Sep 17, 2007 Full Review Scott Weinberg DVDTalk.com Short and sweet and packed with a real affection for classic sci-fi movie-makers, The Sci-Fi Boys should be a treat to anyone who adores the genre. Audience Member While the Sci-Fi boys is not a perfect film I basked in it's warm glow of love for all things sci-fi in in cinema and the man who influenced so many film professionals today who love the genre. Forrest J. Ackerman through his magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie really makes you want to watch some the classic sci-fi movies of the 1950s and 1960s. There are some truly inspiring people in this film and some of my favorite filmmakers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating documentary, recommended for all movie effects fans! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Geeky, awesome, nerdy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Paul Davids' The Sci-Fi Boys is one of the more refreshing documentaries about filmmaking that I've seen in a while. Technically, it's not about the filmmaking itself, but more of the impact of the films themselves and how they've influenced generations of filmmakers and fans, specifically Forrest J. Ackerman. Herein you'll find interviews with Rick Baker, Ray Harryhausen, Peter Jackson, Dennis Muren, John Landis, Leonard Maltin, as well as clips with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Tom Hanks. There's also tons of clips from amateur films when the subject of stop motion comes up. This is actually a fun and touching documentary, but it never finds a firm foothold. It sort of meanders all over the place. The subject matter should be the star, but the framework is a complete mess. Check it out anyway because a lot of the stuff contained within is invaluable, including some of Forrest J. Ackerman's final on-screen moments. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This documentary is an affectionate look at the science fiction and horror movies of the 30s, 40s, and 50s; the people who made said films, as well as a tribute to Forrest J. Ackerman, who founded and edited "Famous Monsters of Filmland", a magazine on the subject of sci-fi and horror films which most of the filmmakers featured in this documentary latched onto as boys. I liked this documentary, it was nice to see how passionate these now famous directors and make-up artists were even as kids about films and monster movies.
