Critics Consensus

The franchise is showing its age, but Scream 4 is undeniably an improvement over its predecessor, with just enough meta humor and clever kills.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Its gimmicks haven't grown up, although its older fan base has. Rated: C Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com [They've] taken the ideas of the first film and twisted them in on themselves, using the technological advances of the last decade and society's celebrity-obsessed culture to give the series an invigorating kick. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 29, 2011 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle There is such a thing as too much meta and, contrary to popular belief, irony is not always good for the bloodshed. Rated: 2/5 Apr 22, 2011 Full Review Josh Winning Radio Times The meta jokes are funny, the death scenes bring a suitably post-Saw level of gore, and the big twist is the best since the 1996 original. In short: it's a scream. Rated: 3/5 Feb 11, 2025 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment Scream 4 certainly does a give a voice to the disgruntled horror fans that have been disenchanted with what Hollywood has been serving up recently, now we just have to hope that they listen. Rated: 4/5 Oct 29, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Scream 4 has the perfect opening to remark on a culture so saturated in meta-ness, irony, and social media that reality no longer has any meaning. Angel C A decade after the events of Scream 3, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson reunited to deliver Scream 4, a slick, self-aware, and wickedly fun sequel that manages to both honor the original trilogy and carve out fresh ground in the age of social media and reboots. Set in a post-Saw, post-Paranormal Activity world, Scream 4 smartly skewers the rules of the modern horror remake—only to twist those rules into something even more subversive. The return of franchise veterans Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) brings a welcome sense of familiarity, but the new generation of Woodsboro teens—including standout performances from Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere—adds fresh energy and stakes. Wes Craven, in one of his final directorial efforts, proves he hasn’t lost his edge. The kills are brutal, the tension taut, and the film’s pace never lags. Williamson’s script crackles with biting commentary on fame, online culture, and the twisted desire for viral notoriety—making Scream 4 feel remarkably prescient over a decade later. The film’s opening sequence is clever, its twists genuinely surprising, and the finale is one of the boldest in the franchise. Emma Roberts in particular delivers a chillingly unhinged performance that flips the “final girl” trope on its head in thrilling fashion. Though it was underappreciated at the time of release, Scream 4 has since earned recognition as a smart, stylish installment that breathed new life into the series. It’s a worthy follow-up that bridges the gap between the original trilogy and the new era of horror—with a knife-sharp grin. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Julia L Not sure why this movie only has a 60%, it’s a little campy but it’s genuinely a great movie. Went into it knowing who one of the killers was but enjoyed the twists regardless. The acting from most of the cast is great, it’s nostalgic, and I’m sad it took another decade to reboot this franchise again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Audience Member Scream 4 would've been an incredible film if it wasn't for the dumb character written characters. It had insane potential to be the best in the series but turned out one of the least likable scream film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review John R It's way better than 3 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Joshua V Happy 14 year anniversary scream 4 one of my favorite movies I love all the kills how bloody glory messy funny how scary shocking in the storyline was super good in the visual effects of the panel vision cameras was super good. Roger Jackson’s ghost face threatening dialogue was shocking creepy thrilling clever. Very threatening, like promises, not threats, but promises and very good delivering them. Neff, Campbell, David, Courtney, and Emma Roberts were amazing in this movie and the soundtrack for this movie was super good and the movie was a $40 million budget it made 97.2 million dollars box office box office hit and I feel like most of the money went to casting in the actual movie in a little bit advertisement and definitely a big upgrade from scream three scream four was definitely better than scream three given they were both for $40 million scream four was better 5 star 10 out 10 star 100 out 100 star Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Emily M I do love this movie. Has some gory deaths and I love Jill's character, she is definitely deranged. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
