      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The franchise is showing its age, but Scream 4 is undeniably an improvement over its predecessor, with just enough meta humor and clever kills.

Audience Member After 10 years this is one of the best movies of 2011! It’s been 11 years since the previous installment in the successful horror franchise So many people were disappointed by how ‘Scream 3’ left a bad taste in people’s mouths It was so meta and self-referential to the point of self-parody it stopped being scary But with this the late Wes Craven gets back to what made these films work in the first place The opening perfectly sets the tone for what’s to come and feels like a throwback to the first film with Drew Barrymore’s character Sidney Prescott is now a successful author not letting the trauma that defined her life turn her into a victim but rather as an opportunity to re-invent herself Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley are married living together with Dewey as the newly appointed sherif but Gale hasn’t written anything in so long she’s been suffering writers block Now with Sidney returning to her hometown of Woodsboro a new series of murders is taking place by someone in a Ghostface mask Who is this new slasher though; is it someone we know or someone from way back in Sidney’s past? The suspects list grows as well as the body count with Ghostface reminding her of what she left behind making her suffer Can Sidney and the others stop the murders? It’s a shame it only made $33 million domestically and only $97 million worldwide But the movie was a welcome return to form for the franchise I’m happy the original cast came back as well as all these new players; Marley Shelton, Alison Brie, Anthony Anderson, and so many tv actors; Lucy Hale, Shenae Grimes, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Aimee Teegarden, Britt Robertson It works so much better with Wes Craven getting back to basics The movie has terrific kills and meta humor making a statement on the current state of horror movies from zombies, aliens, J-horror, found footage, reboots, sequels, remakes, and torture porn but also the effect of social media from twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and the whole thing of becoming accidentally famous overnight My dad was cleverly surprised too which I'm glad The movie improved from what many felt cold about Scream 3 parodying itself to death It also serves as a perfect satire of the horror remake trend but makes it fresh next to our current viral obsession and entertainment I love the bloodier kills and the humor that Kevin Williamson still injects into the script Courtney Cox has some of the best lines Having a final girl is one thing in horror but being the villain is a refresher with the social commentary of being famous on the Internet, only way to gain attention these days is to have traumatic stuff happen not any charity work or helping humanitarian means It's scary cause now it feels more real since there are people out there willing to achieve fame for clicks online committing terrible deeds I actually didn't know Twitch launched the same year this movie came out which was part of the online influencer culture The ending here ends on a more complex note which I admit breaks away from the standard happy go lucky conclusion Marco Beltrami's score could've used some improvement though But I'm glad Scream 4 continued to subvert expectations, be hugely entertaining, self referential, prophetic, and dissect a future that hasn't happened yet Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Lucas S Amo muito esse filme um dos melhores da franquia, fiquei simplesmente apaixonado pela Jill ela foi muito inteligente, com certeza ela que faz esse filme valer a pena. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Gianvito A Good but the light jeez Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Josh G The most technical and well written Scream film, it has a great arch and fully developed characters in a well written and franchise high. Playing on all the previous tropes and excelling at commentary and the kills are the best we've ever had. Plus the cast is a bunch of up and comers, a good film launches someones career this is that to a T. What a tense thrill ride! The lighting is excellent the cinematography is symbolic, a real work of art. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Samuel S Way more interesting then 3, yet so much more darker. I don't know if the trade off is worth it. I know typical horror fans would be more thrilled, but me? It's more thrilling and engaging in the moment, yet what are you left with? You're left with quite a dark feeling afterwards. Much more violent and vulgar which I felt wasn't necessary since everything else surrounding it was good on its own. Maybe it was compensating for 3? The plot was quite fun though with different interesting scenarios, and Williamson's signature dialogue and characters at play. Some interesting commentary on the world too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Madilin S Maybe the franchise is showing it's age, but Scream 4 is the best since the original. Rated: C Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com [They've] taken the ideas of the first film and twisted them in on themselves, using the technological advances of the last decade and society's celebrity-obsessed culture to give the series an invigorating kick. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 29, 2011 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle There is such a thing as too much meta and, contrary to popular belief, irony is not always good for the bloodshed. Rated: 2/5 Apr 22, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Scream 4 has the perfect opening to remark on a culture so saturated in meta-ness, irony, and social media that reality no longer has any meaning.
