Critics Consensus

If Sea Fever never quite heats up as much as it could, it remains an engrossing, well-acted sci-fi thriller with effective horror elements.

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It's made well, made intelligently, and it uses a very small budget with confidence...I was really surprised by how much I liked it. May 4, 2020 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It's mostly agony. Rated: 1/5 Apr 26, 2020 Full Review Katie Walsh Tribune News Service An absorbing (if sometimes muted) wrestle with the notions of ethics and infection, in a moment that couldn't be more appropriate. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 18, 2020 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Sea Fever may not appeal to those seeking escapist entertainment, but the bleak ecological message will attract those who remember such dark warnings as the Doomwatch tv series and film.... Rated: 3/5 Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Britany Murphy The Reel Roundup A film that warns about the ecological impact of humankind, as well as how little we truly know about the ocean and what lies in its depths, Sea Fever is a sci-fi thriller that's about more than just what lies on the surface. Feb 26, 2022 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene As enjoyable as the 1989 Leviathan, but very much rooted in The Now. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Claudio C Sea Fever (2019) The Giant Squid and the infection (11,902 – 07 Sep 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In Ireland, Professor (Dag Malmberg) of the PhD student Siobhán (Hermione Corfield) asks her to go on the fishing vessel Niamh Cinn Óir to research in the field her study of deep sea faunal behavioral patterns. Despite her red hair, she is welcomed by Captain Freya (Connie Nielsen) and her husband Gerard (Dougray Scott); Engineer Omid (Ardalan Esmaili); and crew members Johnny (Jack Hickey), Ciara (Olwen Fouéré) and Sudi (Elie Bouakaze). They are warned by the Irish Coast Guard that their route crosses the exclusion zone, and Freya set a new course for the ship surrounding the zone. But Gerard returns to the original route since the exclusion zone has many fish. Soon the vessel is stranded in the zone and when Siobhán dives to see what is happening, she sees that a giant squid is holding the vessel. Further, Onid and she learn that a parasite has spread an infection on board. “Sea Fever” (2019) is a dramatic thriller, with the story of a group of seven people trapped in an infected fishing vessel. The acting is great, with excellent performances. The story and the plot are reasonable, without any new element. It is not clear whether the fishing vessel is steel or wooden made. It seems to be made of steel, but there are scenes where the hull seems to be made of wood. If the viewer sees “Sea Fever” without much expectation and aware that the movie is not of horror genre, he or she may enjoy. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): “Contágio Em Alto Mar” (“Contagion in High Seas”) My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review Audience Member I didn't like the ending. But the acting was great. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Ian S My mind was wandering a long way before the finish. Nothing new or interesting and the acting was hit and miss. A mediocre B movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Chris H Poor, I'm afraid. It sounded so good from the publicity, but the "creature" is unexciting and the plot crawls along without any real sense of tension. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Tom L Intelligently written, well acted, and expertly directed. Effective science fiction with hints of cosmic horror. A thought-provoking slow burn that won’t appeal to the Saw/Chucky/Jason crowd. Sea Fever is a film in the tradition of The Thing and Alien, but more sedate version with human relationships and interaction more front and center. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review mike s Awful story. Predictable but totally ridiculous. Not worth watching. Casting only surpassed in wierdness by the accents.
