Critics Consensus

Deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work from writer-director Joachim Trier that's marvelously acted across the board.

Engaging. Like group therapy between a neurotic thespian, a very difficult person and those who observe. Go to Full Review

Trier’s film overflows with the kind of genuinely impactful potential that we go to the movies for, the type that leaves us feeling understood more than it makes us feel good. Go to Full Review

Joachim Trier punctuates entire scenes with abrupt cuts to black. It gives the movie the rhythm of a play, which feels perfect since so much of the story revolves around performance. Go to Full Review

Jana 14h Really moving. Slow but rewarding, very deep. See more Chuck B 16h You watch it for the great acting and directing. See more Mimi 1d Great acting, but storyline was long and drawn out.. the kind of movie where you keep checking your watch. The plot could be summed up in 3 sentences..pretty much just a character development movie with some horrific abuse phots thrown in and fixation on suicide. Quite the downer movie.. Waste of time for us! See more Amy P 1d Loved this film! Amazing cast, especially Skarsgard & the 2 actresses that played his daughters. I also loved how their childhood home is yet another character in the film. Beautiful cinematography. You root for these characters and are satisfied by the end credits. See more Juan A 1d Compelling story, well-written script, excellent acting. Thumbs up !! See more selma m 2d Fantastic movie with excellent cast picturing family dynamics, life and healing.
