Sisters July and September are thick as thieves, though very different -September is protective and distrustful of others, while July is open to and curious about the world. Their dynamic is a concern to their single mum, Sheela, who is unsure what to do with them. When September is suspended from their school, July is left to fend for herself and begins to assert her own independence - which does not go unnoticed by September. Tension among the three women builds when they take refuge in an old holiday home in Ireland, where July finds her bond with September shifting in ways she cannot entirely understand or control - and a series of surreal encounters test the family to their limit.

Isaac Feldberg RogerEbert.com An elegantly unmoored tale of two sisters that, in its tart and tense examination of codependency and the isolation it breeds, shares a kinship with Athina Rachel Tsangari’s haunting “Attenberg” and the darkly absurdist satires of Yorgos Lanthimos. May 27, 2024 Full Review Hannah Strong Little White Lies Even so, evoking the strange combination of brutal British realism and light fantasy of Jacqueline Wilson’s iconic young adult novels (particularly Double Act), it’s a promising debut for Labed, who moves between the uncanny and the tender with ease. May 24, 2024 Full Review Tim Grierson Screen International September Says captures the fragility of adolescence with a preciseness and intimacy, brought to life by performances from Mia Tharia and Pascale Kann. May 22, 2024 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Nonetheless, September Says is a very exciting and fascinating movie, especially as a debut from a filmmaker that I hope we can see much more of in the near future. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Nadine Whitney AWFJ.org A sophisticated, poetic, and thorny story of guilt and repression, September Says is a dark mirror of unrealised and unstable identity. Waking up to reality is unkinder when even the most twisted of fantasies are grounded in unspoken truth. Rated: 4/5 Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Àngel Quintana Caimán Cuadernos de Cine A film that knows how to create a brilliant atmosphere, but whose result is hampered by her [Labed] attachment to an unexpected plot twist.
