Sisters July and September are thick as thieves, though very different -September is protective and distrustful of others, while July is open to and curious about the world. Their dynamic is a concern to their single mum, Sheela, who is unsure what to do with them. When September is suspended from their school, July is left to fend for herself and begins to assert her own independence - which does not go unnoticed by September. Tension among the three women builds when they take refuge in an old holiday home in Ireland, where July finds her bond with September shifting in ways she cannot entirely understand or control - and a series of surreal encounters test the family to their limit.

Kevin Maher Times (UK) The closing twist is crudely telegraphed earlier on and arrives with a naff explanatory flashback that’s laugh-out-loud preposterous. So no, not an especially successful adaptation. Rated: 2/5 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times September Says never quite gels. But Tharia and Kann give vivid, unsettling performances, bringing an enthusiastic spark to a film that otherwise seems to float in its own hermetically sealed space. Rated: 2/5 Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A film that feels actorly rather than real. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Brian Viner Daily Mail (UK) It is compellingly unsettling throughout. Rated: 3/5 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Shannon Cotter Film Ireland Magazine The third act unfolds in a way that lacks foreshadowing, yet Labed’s debut is so haunting and assured—packed with eerie imagery and unsettling performances—that it’s entirely possible we’re witnessing the birth of a future classic. Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Nonetheless, September Says is a very exciting and fascinating movie, especially as a debut from a filmmaker that I hope we can see much more of in the near future.
