Critics Consensus

While the real-life story that inspired Sergio is certainly worthy of a biopic, its misguided approach to its noble subject adds up to a disappointingly shallow drama.

The new "Sergio" isn't as seamless or as powerful as Barker's work in the nonfiction arena, but it takes chances and finds some real lyricism along the way. Go to Full Review

A worthy biopic in some respects but it doesn't complicate its subject enough to resonate. Go to Full Review

Even Moura and de Armas' sizzling chemistry presents its own problems to an already hobbled feature; why, after all, is this biopic about an exceptional human built mostly around a love affair? Go to Full Review

We end up with an almost saintly portrait that glosses over milestones, mostly skips internal conflicts, and favors a passionate yet overcooked romance. Go to Full Review

As a slice of old-fashioned drama Sergio ticks all the boxes but, unlike the man himself, it is no notable game-changer. Go to Full Review

Nikhil K 05/15/2024 I liked it. It's nice biopic, you actually feel for him. Don't understand so many negative reviews. Although, this is something not regularly you watch and maybe that is what keep disappointing general audience. Wagner Moura, famous worldwide for his career defining performance as Pablo Escobar stars in this Netflix film based around United Nations diplomat Sergio Vieira Demello's life. A political biopic, it shows the journey of the man and his pursuit to making a change in the world. Wagner gives a wonderful performance as the diplomat who has ideals and wants to make a difference. He's an actor who tries to convey performances through his eyes and subtle reactions. Ana De Armas, who plays his wife/fellow diplomat gives a great performance as well, continuing a good run for her in terms of character based performances. The rest of the cast do a great job as well, considering that the movie is a performance based drama, they all do well in their given characters. Unfortunately, the film suffers from a jumbled narrative. The film is edited in a confusing manner, jumping from one timeline of his life to another with less cohesion than you would like. If the film focused on certain parts of his timeline a little more, and then jumped to another part, the film would probably work better. The scene's with Sergio under the rubble reminds you a lot of the Oliver Stone film World Trade Center, and the dying man reminiscing of his life reminded me a lot of Hey Ram's film structure. The movie could have been something amazing had it had better editing and a more focused narrative. The movie is one of the better Netflix productions of recent times however, and is a good watch regardless! See more Sean W 03/25/2021 Largely agree with the other reviews. Ana and Wagner were good, it seems like a good concept, the production values are high, it just doesn't seem to do justice to Sergio and misses. In addition to that I had too many hang-ups with the complexities of their relationship to care about the relationship by the end. See more Read all reviews
