Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard The film isn't much like recent examples of torture porn. It's too stylish for that. Rated: 3/5 Sep 14, 2007 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times The story came from Get Carter's source author, English crime writer Ted Lewis, but the venomous sophistication and serpentine inner logic are French. Sep 14, 2007 Full Review David Gritten Daily Telegraph (UK) Taut, stylish French thriller, based on a novel by Ted Lewis. Sep 14, 2007 Full Review Matthew Turner ViewLondon Disappointing French thriller, thanks to a ridiculous plot, overblown direction and some dodgy acting from Clovis Cornillac. Rated: 2/5 Sep 14, 2007 Full Review Steve Watson Film4 A penchant for silliness and a tabloid-ready storyline mean The Serpent is a decent thriller that loses some of its impact as it unfolds, but remains a well-paced and enjoyable film. Rated: 3/5 Sep 14, 2007 Full Review Tom Dawson Total Film A mite overblown, but no less enjoyable for it - and guaranteed to get a Hollywood re-jig. Rated: 3/5 Sep 14, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A re-watch for me and I don't feel the trailer does this enough justice. For me it's a good gripping thriller, not completely original, but loved it all the same Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A very good Cat and Mouse thriller. A former class-mate from school, a cowardly wimp then, has now grown up into a cold, calculating, tough-guy hell bent on revenge for an incident back in those schooldays. A spell in the Foreign Legion has made him a sharp, ruthless killing machine when he needs to be. As the plot continues it is difficult to see if and where his weakness is. Maybe it needs the mouse to start hunting the cat. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very pulpy, violent thriller based on an English novel of the 1970s, Plender by Ted Lewis (he wrote the novel upon which Get Carter is based fact fans). This is a not wholly convincing thriller that nevertheless has some terffic set pieces - an escape from a police station, a car crash with a body in the trunk and police coming - that elevate it above the standard. The lead actor, Yvan Attal has a very haggard, beleagured look, and the villain of the piece, Clovis Cornillac's Plender is suitably creepy. It is an entertaining two hours, but at the end of the movie not quite distinct enough to become truly memorable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A well made Hitchcockian noir thriller- tense and worthwhile watch. Both Attal and Clovis put in good performances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Eric Barbier brings overtones of Hitchcock, Chabrol and Clouzot with this suspenseful 2006 thriller which displays itself as a fine example of a gripping man-on-the-run narrative, headlined with convincing performances from Yvan Attal and Clovis Cornillac as the victim and villain respectively. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member French revenge thriller....good story line but too much violence. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
